Principles of Scientific Management (F.W. Taylor)

The slide explains the theory proposed by F.W. Taylor. He introduced scientific methods of doing work to increase productivity. Thus he is known as 'Father of Scientific Management;. Thus, the theory 'Principles of Scientific Management'.

  1. 1. “In the past the man has been first; in the future the system must be first... The first object of any good system must be that of developing first class men.”<br />
  2. 2. SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT:-<br />“It is the art of knowing exactly what is to be done in the best and the cheapest way.”<br />
  3. 3. OBJECTIVE<br />To secure the maximum prosperity for the employer & employee.<br />Maximum prosperity of employer include- Development of every branch of the business.<br />
  4. 4. Contd…<br />3. Maximum prosperity of employee include-<br /> To develop each man to a state maximum efficiency.<br />
  5. 5. FOUR PRINCIPLES:-<br />Replacing the rule of thumb by Scientific methods.<br />Selecting, training, teaching and develop the workman.<br />Division of work and responsibility.<br />Cooperation between Management and workers.<br />
  6. 6. Explanation:-<br />Bethlehem Steel company, in 1898.<br />Had 5 blast furnace.<br />Gang of 75 person were formed.<br />Each man loaded in average of 12.5 tons per day.<br />
  7. 7. Scientific study showed that a person can handle between 47-48 tons per day. (1st Principle)<br />We observed a gang for 3-4 days.<br />Selected the best four.<br />Finally selected Schmidt , a Pennsylvania Dutchman.(2nd Principle).<br />
  8. 8. Salary was increased from $1.15 per day to $1.85 per day.<br />Schmidt had to load 47 tons per day and management would provide a man to instruct him in attaining this goal. (3rd Principle)<br />
  9. 9. A man from management accompanied him. Instructed him, cooperated him, as well as took care of himand strength. (4th Principle).<br />
  10. 10. RESULT:-<br /><ul><li>Schmidt loaded 47.5 tons per day.
  11. 11. Increment of more than 200%.
  12. 12. Schmidt got higher salary.
  13. 13. Maximum benefit to both employer and employee.</li></li></ul><li>Proves:-<br />High Profit to both employee and employer.<br />Increase in standard of living for employee.<br />Better working condition.<br />Satisfaction to both employee and employer.<br />
