MARKET UPDATES & STOCK RECOMMENDATION
The Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) hopes the upcoming 2015 Budget will incorporate more initiatives to
encourage the adoption of electronic banking."We look forward to initiatives to move transactions away from
cash," said Council Chairman Datuk Abdul Farid bin Alias. He expressed the hope that there would be more
measures to enhance the strong fundamentals of local financial institutions.
The Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) has offered to bid for five highway projects costing
about Rs9,000 crore (US$1.45 billion) based on the public-private partnership(PPP) mode, The Times of India
reported. "It's a welcome sign since the government's outgo will reduce significantly if we get bidders on PPP
mode."If we go for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode we have to bear 100 per cent of the
cost," India's road transport secretary Vijay Chhibber was quoted as saying in the report. He also confirmed that the
government had accepted CIDB's proposal.Chhibber said National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would be
responsible for initiating bids for two of these highway projects and for therest his ministry would invite bids.
THE World Bank has revised upwards the growth projection for Malaysia to 5.7 per cent this year from 5.4 per cent,
saying the economy will be spurred by improvements in exports. It noted the better-than-expected performance of
6.3 per cent for the first half of the year, which was derived from a recovery in exports.Exports, which have
performed consistently since the third quarter of last year, expanded by five per cent quarter-on-quarter between
April and June.
International rating agency Moody’s Investors Service expects Malaysia’s fiscal deficit to narrow to 3.1 per cent of
gross domestic product (GDP) this year, coming in below the official target of 3.5 per cent.It described Malaysia
latest move to reduce fuel subsidy as credit positive.“The move is credit-positive for the sovereign, because it will
help reduce the government’s subsidy bill and contribute to its fiscal consolidation,” commented senior analysts
Christian de Guzman and Steffen Dyck.
RAIL technology specialist Bombardier Transportation is in talks with local parties to form a consortium and bid for
Line 2 and Line 3 of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project.“We hope to form the consortium in time
for the tenders. We will need different divisions such as signalling, systems, electrification and rolling stock. Hence,
we are talking to more than five parties,” said Bombardier president of systems division Pierre Attendu.“We have
existing partners working with us on the KVMRT Sungai Buloh to Kajang line, such as Global Rail and Hartasuma for
the light rail transit extension project. “Whether or not they want to work with us again depends on them but we
are talking.”
