2. Granularity Requires Scalability
The number of use cases will grow with the opportunities
offered by 5G. This has an immediate impact on the number
of policies that have to be configured in the policy control
server. Furthermore, each policy may include different
settings depending on the type of subscriber, network slice
and use case. In both 4G and 5G, the PCRF/PCF element
interacts with gateways to control the network data streams
through policy enforcement. This data stream management
has changed from 4G, where the bearer was the primary
element, to 5G, where the granularity is per data flow.

Furthermore, the Enea Rules Engine was designed with large
policy sets as a fundamental consideration, and to consistently
deliver high performance, irrespective of the number of
policies used. Operators have defined very large numbers of
different policies in live deployments and the Enea Policy
Manager has been tested with up to ten thousand polices
without any impact on the performance. The performance in
this context is defined as the time to reach a policy decision
and communicate it through the interfaces.
