In pairs/fours, discuss the character of Simon,
considering and discussing the points below and
in what way he is different to the other boys.
1. Building shelters for everyone (p. 50-51)
2. The way he is kind to the littluns (p. 57)
3. He likes to be alone, a break away from the
others; he likes to think (p. 58-60)
4. he gives an alternative explanation for ‘the
beast’.
3. Simon
Throughout the novel, Simon has been an
isolated figure. The boys regard him as
"cracked", "batty". For Golding, however, there
is a beauty and spirituality in the character of
Simon.
Choose six to eight words from the
description at the end of Chapter 9, when
Simon's body is washed out to sea, that
evoke the poetic quality of his death.
4. Homework
Based on our discussion and the answers from the
questions, write about HOW Golding presents the
character of Simon. Things to include:
1. What, according to Golding, the character of
Simon represents
2. The situations in which we see Simon (which
events in the book)
3. What Simon does in these situations - how he
interacts with the other boys
4. How these situations help to develop Simon as a
character
