2014 Annual Report
Dear
Friends,
In health,
Laura Pritchard-
Compton, (Founder)
and Fred Perry
(Board Chari)
2014 was a year of growth for Urban Perform. Since
being charged by the English Avenue community to
provide access to safe and affordable fitness options, we
continue to UPlift health and UPhold communities on the
westside of Atlanta.
In 2014, we moved into our new, central location at
678 Joseph E. Boone and saw our impact grow
exponentially. Thanks to a grant from the Falcons
Youth Foundation, our new location has increased
accessibility for many community members as well
as our visibility in the neighborhood.
We formed many new partnerships on our quest to build a healthier
community. In the Summer and Fall, fresh fruits and vegetables came to
Urban Perform through a partnership with Georgia Food Oasis and a
weekly farmer’s market. Urban Perform partnered with Tri-Kids to host two
outstanding youth triathlon seasons. The 3rd annual Casino Night was a
huge success as more than 130 people supported Urban Perform by
bidding on silent auction items and playing casino games.
In celebrating our third year as an organization, we owe an enormous
thank you to all of our donors, supporters, volunteers and partners! We are
incredibly grateful to work with so many who believe in our vision and
champion the fight for healthier Atlanta communities.
With a new year comes new
opportunities in the pursuit of
health. We vow to continue to
serve the community as we
live it UP in 2015!

After 6 weeks of training, the tri-
kids completed three triathlons, two in
the Spring and one in the Fall.
We renovated an old gas station
and Urban Perform moved into a new,
central location.
Through a partnership with Georgia
Food Oasis, Urban Perform hosted a
weekly Farmer's Market.
Our Executive Director was nationally
recognized as one of SELF Magazine's
Women Doing Good.
The 3rd annual Casino Night was our
largest to date and it was a huge
success!
Living it
UP
in 2014
Barriers to
Exercise
Accessibility - 59% of Georgia youth have no access
to community centers in their neighborhood
Poverty - only 10% of adults in families below the
poverty threshold meet the national exercise guidelines
Segregation - African Americans living in low SES
communities have fewer available spaces to exercise
Communities within the 30314 zip code are
characterized by low-income, high crime,
low walkability, and a lack of physical fitness
facilities.
Fitness Desert -
an area that is both
low-income and has
low access to gyms or
fitness services in the
surrounding area
We improve the health of
families in underserved
communities by promoting
quality nutrition and active
lifestyles.
Our Mission
"Working out at UP has
improved my blood pressure
levels. I have lost 6 inches
around the waist and 20lbs.
My upper body is stronger. I
can now run instead of only
walking! I am more confident
in my skin, and I am happier
when I look in the mirror. I
even sleep more, pay
attention to what I eat and
manage my stress better. UP
encourages us to change our
bad habits." - Markita Jordan
"I have a new health perspective. I
get up each day and make exercise
a part of my routine. Urban Perform
classes and open gym are a part of
my regular routine. I now exercise
and eat right. I even jog now! I do
things I did not do before. My blood
pressure is lower. I am in better
shape, and I have a healthier way of
being. I feel better! I sleep better! I
have a new motivation for
exercising." - Leroy Braxton
After an initial free visit,
UP charges $2 per visit
or $15 per month, a rate
that was set by
community members
When I heard about UP, I knew I had to get
involved! I truly believe in the healing
power of regular physical activity and that
everyone deserves access to safe, fun,
and affordable health recreation.
- Doree Gardener, Kickboxing Instructor
Many of the things I learned
during my time at UP are
hard to quantify as they
were relational. UP gave me
the opportunity to learn
more about myself and
grow in many ways.
- Julie Shearer, Intern
Contacting Urban Perform was the
best decision I made as a newbie to
Georgia. Urban Perform is a positive
place of hope and inspiration for me
and many others. I am inspired to
remain healthy because of the
residents of Vine City and remain
hopeful for the power of community
due to the high expectations of the
staff. - Jen SanAngelo, Zumba
