Mayor Christopher Kuhn has joined the Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC), a new effort to help the
state's communities get on the path to active living and healthier lifestyles. To kick off the Mayors
Wellness Campaign, Frelinghuysen Township will host a "Walk with the Mayor" at its annual
Founder's Day on June 6.
Citing statistics regarding obesity among New Jersey residents of all ages and the desire to
encourage healthy habits among Frelinghuysen residents, Mayor Kuhn issued a proclamation
supporting the Mayors Wellness Campaign at the April 15 township committee meeting. Sarah
Shoemaker of the Warren County Health Department accepted the proclamation and acknowledged
the township's participation in the campaign and the larger Choose Healthy Warren County
program.
Through a Shaping NJ grant funded by the NJ Department of Health and the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation, the Choose Healthy Warren County program promotes the Mayors Wellness Campaign
in all municipalities, a healthy menu options program in Hackettstown, and additional initiatives.
"As the Mayor of Frelinghuysen I believe strongly in promoting health and wellness within our
community," Kuhn remarked. "The township currently supports organized youth sports and
recreation activities for our children. Now through the Frelinghuysen Forest Preserve project and
the Mayors Wellness Campaign we are rapidly expanding recreational health and wellness
opportunities to all age groups and ability levels. I ask that you attend the Walk With The Mayor
event on June 6, to find out more and stay tuned for details on our future bike ride and
snowshoe/cross country ski event," he added.
The goal of the Mayors Wellness Campaign is to increase opportunities for New Jersey residents to
participate in daily physical activity with a long-term goal of reducing personal and health care costs
secondary to obesity. Through public-private partnerships, the Mayors Wellness Campaign provides
structure and resources for healthy community initiatives. By encouraging mayors to play a
leadership role in supporting local assessments and opportunities for active, healthy lifestyles, the
intent of the Mayors Wellness Campaign is to improve health and make New Jersey a national leader
in community-based health interventions.
The Mayors Wellness Campaign (www.mayorswellnesscampaign.org) is an initiative of the New
Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (www.NJHCQI.org) in partnership with the New Jersey State
League of Municipalities (www.njslom.org).
The mission of the Mayors Wellness Campaign is to equip mayors and other key leaders with the
tools to develop and implement active-living initiatives in their communities with the ultimate goal of
improving health and reducing the skyrocketing health care costs that come with the obesity
problem in New Jersey. Currently, more than half of the New Jersey's 565 municipalities are
participating in the campaign and are working aggressively to decrease obesity rates and increase
the overall health of their communities. Major funding for the Mayors Wellness Campaign is
