Camerawork Similarities
In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, the idea of the audience looking through a
crowd at the scene, gives the impression that the person watching is part of the clip.
It creates the idea the camera is in a point-of-view shot, so the watching audience takes
the position of a spectator in the cricket crowd watching the game. This allows a
persons perspective to be created to allow the audience to create some understanding
about what is happening in the scene.
!
In the LA Noire title sequence clip, a similar shot technique is used of a point-of-view
shot created by looking through a crowd of people at the scene in front of them.
Allowing the audience to appreciate what is occurring in that certain scene, creating a
perspective for the viewer to gain knowledge on what’s happening. It focuses attention
on what the rest of the crowd are also paying attention to, making you pay attention to
that.
In the LA Noire title sequence clip, an establishing shot is used. This immediately gives the
viewer a sense of understanding about what is unfolding in the scene, as well as where it is
set. From this scene in the clip ( Top Picture Right) the sign says ‘Building a better California’
so the audience can establish where the scene is set, also more information about what is
happening.
!
In comparison, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, an establishing shot is also used at
the beginning of a scene to create an impression about the building and therefore linking to
the character associated. This camera angle adds to the feeling that it’s rather intimidating
and the large scale of the building creates this sense of authority, allowing the audience to
make an assumption about the character who works there. Also, the use of the reference to
location is told to the audience.
The establishing shot allows an audience to have some knowledge about the scene which
they are introduced to.
Camerawork Differences
In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, an over the shoulder shot is used,
looking from the characters shoulder onto the subject. This shows perspective
of what the character is seeing, allowing the audience, in this case, to also be
surprised by the appearance of another character in the room.
!
Classically, the character takes up one third of the screen, as shown here
(Picture Left) , to allow the audience to recognise another characters presence.
The quick movement in the camera shot creates this build up of tension to who
the other unexpected character may be, before it is revealed.
Although, in the LA Noire title sequence clip, a two shot of characters,
engaging in conversation, is used to create the impression of a relationship
between both of them. As shown (Picture Right) the two men shaking hands
and in suits may suggest some sort of business relationship and a deal being
made. This use of shot may have been used to emphasise the positive
relations the city people have with each-other. Relating to how the whole
city is meant to portray the perfect ‘role model to the world.’
This one scene may be symbolism for the whole city relations, and that they
are all agreeable and respectful of each-other.
Mise en Scene Similarities
In both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire
title sequence clip costumes can be used to identify characters
and make associations with them.
!
Both clips use suits as costumes which create the idea of
sophistication and importance. The black and white outfit also
creates the connotations with business and a sense of authority.
!
In addition, the formality of the costume could refer to the
character themselves, the type of person they are.
In both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire title sequence clip
the set can be used to refer to the current situation and what happens in the rest
of the clip.
!
The (Top Picture) from the Casino Royale opening scene clip, uses a low camera
shot, which makes the building look large and links to authority and slightly
intimidating, which links to the people who are involved in the building.
The use of the lifts also create the idea of distance and enormity.
!
In the (Bottom Picture) LA Noire title sequence clip, the city is portrayed to be
perfect and something which is a role model to the rest of the world.
The image of all the building with lights on also shows enormity and a large scale
city.
In comparison to the other clip, this is a lot less dramatic in the sense of authority
and hardness, the city being represented to be a nice and civilised place to live.
Mise en Scene Differences
In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, lighting is used to define and make
associations with characters.
In (Picture Left) this scene, the character ‘ James Bond’ has darkened lighting on him,
this draws the audiences attention to him as it looks out of place in the already lit
scene. But the lighting has purposely been done in this way so you associate the
character to have some dark side, and may not be who you think they are.
It creates the impression of the character being mysterious and lurking in the dark,
something different about them than the rest of the crowd.
However, the LA Noire title sequence clip has computer generated lighting.
In both clips, the use of gun props are used, but for different reasons and to create a
different effect.
In the LA Noire title sequence clip, the fake gun is used by the cowboy to show how
the city has opportunities for everyone and how diverse the place can be.
The idea of the gun being fake also highlights that even a violent object in the city isn’t
really functional, shows how there’s meant to be no violence there.
Using it, in what appears to be making a film, shows how the city must have some
wealth and talented people qualified able to make the film.
In comparison, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, James
Bond has a gun to shoot another character. James Bond is a
very well known character and has a reputation as a secret
agent. The use of the gun also shows how the character has the
ability to kill and that shows something about the traits of the
character as well as their abilities professionally.
James Bond has the connotations with danger and high risks, the
characters around him at the time must have some some sort
of significance.
Representation Similarities
The similarity between the LA Noire title sequence clip and the Casino Royale
opening scene clip is the fact the male gender seem to be the main characters.
In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, woman are neither shown a lot as characters throughout or
represented to be main characters in the clip, while men are the main subjects throughout the whole
clip.
In addition, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, men feature as
the main characters.
In the clip, there are three main characters which feature, as shown in
the pictures to the right.
The male leads may have been chosen as they fit the roles as well as
the plot-line. But the use of only males could be seen to be unequal.
Specifically, the idea of male dominated characters isn’t uncommon.
!
In the LA Noire title sequence clip, throughout the scenes there are repeated
mentions with the idea of it being a ‘mans’ ownership and a ‘mans’ castle. Although
there are woman featured, the majority of the main characters which appear are
male.
This highlights the idea of woman being seen not to be working and instead being
at home, while a man goes out and earns a living.
!
The gender inequality presented is not massive, just a minority of female
characters who have seemingly important roles in the clip.
Representation Differences
In the Casino Royale opening scene clip woman are
barely appear, only in the audience of the cricket game.
The main characters featured being male.
In the clip, there are no main female characters at all.
Woman are barely featured in any of the scenes.
In comparison, in the LA Noire title sequence clip there is more female characters involved. There is a scene (Picture Above Right)
where woman are more heavily featured. They seem to be auditioning for something, and although that woman are now featured they
are being judged for a part. So although there are females, there’s an underlying judgement in their role.
Comparing that in the Casino Royale opening
scene clip contains a lot of fast paced action
scenes. Creating the idea that the full film has
the theme of criminality and danger involved
with fight scenes filled with action.
However the LA Noire title sequence clip has no criminality references, referring possibly to the
idea of the city being a perfect place, as the clip quotes: “A twentieth century city that will
become a model for the world.” Suggesting it can lead by example to the rest of the world.
!
The idea of there being no criminals or crime actually occurring in the area may be unrealistic, but
the idea could be possible.
Both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire title sequence clip represent the
idea of criminality in completely different ways.

  • 1. Camerawork Similarities In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, the idea of the audience looking through a crowd at the scene, gives the impression that the person watching is part of the clip. It creates the idea the camera is in a point-of-view shot, so the watching audience takes the position of a spectator in the cricket crowd watching the game. This allows a persons perspective to be created to allow the audience to create some understanding about what is happening in the scene. ! In the LA Noire title sequence clip, a similar shot technique is used of a point-of-view shot created by looking through a crowd of people at the scene in front of them. Allowing the audience to appreciate what is occurring in that certain scene, creating a perspective for the viewer to gain knowledge on what’s happening. It focuses attention on what the rest of the crowd are also paying attention to, making you pay attention to that. In the LA Noire title sequence clip, an establishing shot is used. This immediately gives the viewer a sense of understanding about what is unfolding in the scene, as well as where it is set. From this scene in the clip ( Top Picture Right) the sign says ‘Building a better California’ so the audience can establish where the scene is set, also more information about what is happening. ! In comparison, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, an establishing shot is also used at the beginning of a scene to create an impression about the building and therefore linking to the character associated. This camera angle adds to the feeling that it’s rather intimidating and the large scale of the building creates this sense of authority, allowing the audience to make an assumption about the character who works there. Also, the use of the reference to location is told to the audience. The establishing shot allows an audience to have some knowledge about the scene which they are introduced to.
  • 2. Camerawork Differences In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, an over the shoulder shot is used, looking from the characters shoulder onto the subject. This shows perspective of what the character is seeing, allowing the audience, in this case, to also be surprised by the appearance of another character in the room. ! Classically, the character takes up one third of the screen, as shown here (Picture Left) , to allow the audience to recognise another characters presence. The quick movement in the camera shot creates this build up of tension to who the other unexpected character may be, before it is revealed. Although, in the LA Noire title sequence clip, a two shot of characters, engaging in conversation, is used to create the impression of a relationship between both of them. As shown (Picture Right) the two men shaking hands and in suits may suggest some sort of business relationship and a deal being made. This use of shot may have been used to emphasise the positive relations the city people have with each-other. Relating to how the whole city is meant to portray the perfect ‘role model to the world.’ This one scene may be symbolism for the whole city relations, and that they are all agreeable and respectful of each-other.
  • 3. Mise en Scene Similarities In both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire title sequence clip costumes can be used to identify characters and make associations with them. ! Both clips use suits as costumes which create the idea of sophistication and importance. The black and white outfit also creates the connotations with business and a sense of authority. ! In addition, the formality of the costume could refer to the character themselves, the type of person they are. In both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire title sequence clip the set can be used to refer to the current situation and what happens in the rest of the clip. ! The (Top Picture) from the Casino Royale opening scene clip, uses a low camera shot, which makes the building look large and links to authority and slightly intimidating, which links to the people who are involved in the building. The use of the lifts also create the idea of distance and enormity. ! In the (Bottom Picture) LA Noire title sequence clip, the city is portrayed to be perfect and something which is a role model to the rest of the world. The image of all the building with lights on also shows enormity and a large scale city. In comparison to the other clip, this is a lot less dramatic in the sense of authority and hardness, the city being represented to be a nice and civilised place to live.
  • 4. Mise en Scene Differences In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, lighting is used to define and make associations with characters. In (Picture Left) this scene, the character ‘ James Bond’ has darkened lighting on him, this draws the audiences attention to him as it looks out of place in the already lit scene. But the lighting has purposely been done in this way so you associate the character to have some dark side, and may not be who you think they are. It creates the impression of the character being mysterious and lurking in the dark, something different about them than the rest of the crowd. However, the LA Noire title sequence clip has computer generated lighting. In both clips, the use of gun props are used, but for different reasons and to create a different effect. In the LA Noire title sequence clip, the fake gun is used by the cowboy to show how the city has opportunities for everyone and how diverse the place can be. The idea of the gun being fake also highlights that even a violent object in the city isn’t really functional, shows how there’s meant to be no violence there. Using it, in what appears to be making a film, shows how the city must have some wealth and talented people qualified able to make the film. In comparison, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, James Bond has a gun to shoot another character. James Bond is a very well known character and has a reputation as a secret agent. The use of the gun also shows how the character has the ability to kill and that shows something about the traits of the character as well as their abilities professionally. James Bond has the connotations with danger and high risks, the characters around him at the time must have some some sort of significance.
  • 5. Representation Similarities The similarity between the LA Noire title sequence clip and the Casino Royale opening scene clip is the fact the male gender seem to be the main characters. In the Casino Royale opening scene clip, woman are neither shown a lot as characters throughout or represented to be main characters in the clip, while men are the main subjects throughout the whole clip. In addition, in the Casino Royale opening scene clip, men feature as the main characters. In the clip, there are three main characters which feature, as shown in the pictures to the right. The male leads may have been chosen as they fit the roles as well as the plot-line. But the use of only males could be seen to be unequal. Specifically, the idea of male dominated characters isn’t uncommon. ! In the LA Noire title sequence clip, throughout the scenes there are repeated mentions with the idea of it being a ‘mans’ ownership and a ‘mans’ castle. Although there are woman featured, the majority of the main characters which appear are male. This highlights the idea of woman being seen not to be working and instead being at home, while a man goes out and earns a living. ! The gender inequality presented is not massive, just a minority of female characters who have seemingly important roles in the clip.
  • 6. Representation Differences In the Casino Royale opening scene clip woman are barely appear, only in the audience of the cricket game. The main characters featured being male. In the clip, there are no main female characters at all. Woman are barely featured in any of the scenes. In comparison, in the LA Noire title sequence clip there is more female characters involved. There is a scene (Picture Above Right) where woman are more heavily featured. They seem to be auditioning for something, and although that woman are now featured they are being judged for a part. So although there are females, there’s an underlying judgement in their role. Comparing that in the Casino Royale opening scene clip contains a lot of fast paced action scenes. Creating the idea that the full film has the theme of criminality and danger involved with fight scenes filled with action. However the LA Noire title sequence clip has no criminality references, referring possibly to the idea of the city being a perfect place, as the clip quotes: “A twentieth century city that will become a model for the world.” Suggesting it can lead by example to the rest of the world. ! The idea of there being no criminals or crime actually occurring in the area may be unrealistic, but the idea could be possible. Both the Casino Royale opening scene clip and the LA Noire title sequence clip represent the idea of criminality in completely different ways.
