• Steps to health: A European framework to promote physical activities for health
(WHO, 2007).
• European Charter on Counteracting obesity (WHO, 2006).

of which are :
i) Technical guide (29 September, 2016)
ii) Childhood obesity (9 September, 2016)
iii) The Eatwell guide by Public Health England (24 August, 2016).
Deprivation & Childhood Obesity
 In Hillingdon, a higher
number of obese
children were found in
deprived, socially
backward areas –
mostly in the south of
the borough as shown
in this figure (NOO,
2010).
National (UK) and local (Hillingdon) initiatives towards obesity

• The UK government intends to reverse the high obesity rates.
• Healthy Lives, Healthy People : A call to action on obesity in England, a strategy by UK

them.
• NMC Healthcare participated in an anti-obesity drive (NMC Healthcare, 2012).
• The Royal College Network (RCN) declared that nursing should form a vital part
of promoting health and helping people to function well.
• In the UK, nurses are considered an important and fundamental component of the

Editor's Notes

  1. Gives an overview of the topics being covered during the presentation.
  2. Energy is released by metabolic activities and physical activities of the body. When the energy intake is more than the energy expenditure , obesity occurs. (Public Health England, 2016). Prevalence and obesity trends are obtained by population surveys (Ogden et al., 2007).
  3. Food and nutrition action plan: encourages action in a range of policy areas The main aim is to improve a) food system governance and b) quality of the diet and nutrition, promoting health and well-being in a population. Eatwell guide provides guidelines for healthy eating habits to achieve a balanced diet.
  4. The Marmot Review discussed health inequalities and designed strategies promoting healthy and good standards of living. The National Child management programme surveillance: keeps track of diet and obesity among children. Hillington obesity strategy group: started in 2008, the Hillington council lists various strategies that are being implemented to reduce obesity. Feed My Family core model - a 6-week programme aimed at parents in early years focusing on food choices. Healthy Lives, Healthy People aimed at creating a downward trend in child and adult obesity in the UK by 2020.
  5. NMC Healthcare participated in an anti-obesity drive to increase public awareness about the advantages of a healthy lifestyle and the adverse impacts of obesity.
