2. Articles as Pronouns
• In English, we often use the demonstrative
pronouns “that” or “those” and “of” to refer
back to some thing or group previously
mentioned that is “possessed” or “owned by”
someone.
• Example: His books, unlike those of his
mother, were always well thumbed, with
broken spines.
3. Spanish Pronouns
• This particular structure is created in Spanish
with the definite article (the same as that of
the referent) and the word “de.”
4. Examples
• La cola de mi perro, diferente a la de mi gato,
es muy larga.
• El rol de una hermana era muy diferente al de
un hermano
• Mis gatos son mas inteligentes que los de mi
amiga.
• Las luces de Navidad me recuerdan de las de
Hanukkah.
5. Other Vocabulary Words
• You should be developing two lists of
vocabulary words:
• One list should be general transitional
expressions that are useful to know.
• The other words should be for those that are
related to the study of literature (which is
what this article is about).
• Be sure to look carefully at the updated lists!
6. Homework for Wednesday
• Please prepare me a 60-80 word summary of
section 2, which begins on p. 41 and ends at
the top of 43.
• Type this and bring it to class with you, but do
not put your name on it!
• Please be sure to type (I am having a lot of
problems with my eyes these days and would
appreciate it).
