Student development philosophy enables student affairs professionals to identify and address
student needs, design programs, develop policies, and create healthy college environments
that encourage positive growth in students. Because student development theories focus on
intellectual growth as well as affective and behavioral changes during the college years, they
also encourage partnerships between student affairs professionals and faculty to enhance
student learning and maximize positive student outcomes. (Evans et al, page 7, 2010 )
This philosophy is one of the key instruments for students to succeed in their college or post-
secondary career.
The	mission	of	this	department	is	to	help	students	develop	a	
pathway	to	success	in	their	student	career	at	this	institution,	
by	creating	strong	cognitive,	inclusive	bonds	within	our	
diverse	student	population,	providing	support	throughout	&	
among	our	staff,	instructors,	counselors	and	fellow	students,	
with	open	communication	along	with	students	and	faculty.

•	Effective	Performance	Assist	students	to	achieve	an	effective	performance	in	class.	
•	Collaboration	Provide	an	opportunity	to	the	students	to	work	as	a	team,	evaluate	the		
									performance	of	the	members	of	the	group	giving	a	chance	for	self-evaluation	
•	Diversity	and	Inclusion			Students	feel	the	comfort	of	being	in	an	open	minded,	caring,	
								respectful	and	inclusive	environment	in	which	they	can	develop	their	cognitive	skills	to	their	full	potential,	
								by	the	support	of	their	classmates	
•	Identity	Students	develop	a	sense	of	belonging	in	which	their	differences	create	a	unique	environment,		
									a	place	in	which	all	can	grow	and	learn	from	each	other,	regardless	of	our	gender,	ethnicity	or	social	status.	
Enhancing	the	development	of	students	has	long	been	a	primary	role	of	students’	affairs	practitioners.		
Identity	development	theories	help	practitioners	to	understand	how	students	go	about	discovering	their	abilities,		
aptitudes	and	objectives;	the	tasks	involved	in	discovering	abilities,	goals,	and	effectiveness	are	part	of	creating	a	sense	of	identity	
(Erickson,	E.	H.	(1959/1994).
Developing	an	effective	and	positive	influence	on	students	through	mutual	collaboration,		
effective	performance,	in	an	inclusive	environment	in	which	they	can	feel	a	sense	
	of	belonging	regardless	of	their	diverse	social,	emotional	or	cultural	background,	is	the	main	GOAL		of	the	
Students	Affairs	Office		
In	order	to	fully	assist	our	students,	we	focus	on	the	following	student	development	
theories:	
Perry’s	Theory	of	Intellectual	and	Ethical	Development	
• Perry’s	theory	provides	a	basic	understanding	of	how	students	make	meaning	
through	a	continuum	of	development	moving	from	duality	to	evolving	
commitments	(Evans	et	al.,	2010).	
• Kohlberg’s	Moral	Development	Theory	
• Kohlberg	developed	a	theory	of	moral	development	and	moral	reasoning	based	on	
six	stages	of	development.	Kohlberg	based	his	work	on	the	findings	of	Piaget	and	
developed	his	theory	after	studying	boys	from	middle	and	lower	class	families	in	
the	1950’s.	
OUR	GOALS
•	Gilligan’s	Theory	of	Women’s	Moral	Development	
• Gilligan	was	a	critic	of	Kohlberg’s	theory	charging	that	his	work	was	biased	
towards	women.	As	a	result,	Gilligan	developed	a	second	theory	of	moral	
development	based	on	gender	differences	thought	to	be	associated	with	
these	two	orientations:	the	morality	of	care	and	the	morality	of	justice	
(Evans	et	al.,	2010).	
• Kolb’s	Experiential	Learning	Theory	
• Kolb	formulated	a	development	theory	based	on	the	notion	that	individuals	
learn	through	specific	styles.	These	learning	styles	emerge	through	whether	
the	individual	is	dealing	with	a	concrete	experience	or	abstract	concept	by	
either	active	experimentation	or	reflective	observation	(Bergsteiner	et	al.,	
2010).

• Promote	readiness,	challenge	&	support	
• Encourage	Involvement	and	participation	
• Demonstrate	care	and	sympathize	with	students	emotional	problems

• 	Assist	with	the	Individual	development	transition		
• Promote	Inclusiveness	and	gender	equality	
• Assist	college	students	with	learning	disabilities	by	evaluating		
• Community	college	student	development	courses	(	Turnberger,	S.	2008)		
No	two	students	are	alike,	and	no	one	theory	is	likely	to	explain	the	development	of	every	aspect	of	any		
one	student.	Integrating	concepts	from	several	theories	can	often	provide	a	more	comprehensive	understanding	of	
development.	Translating	theory	to	practice	can	seem	like	a	complicated	process	(R.	Brown	&	Barr,	1990).
