2. Difference between climate and
weather
Weather is the term we use for short-term
atmospheric conditions at a particular time
and place.
Climate is average weather for a city,
country or the whole planet over years.
Climate varies over years with natural
cycles/events
Changes over decades to thousands of
years are caused by changes in
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from
both natural and human activity.
3. DEFORESTATION
Deforestation is the full or large scale
removal of a forest, or area of tress, in
order to clear land for human
development. Deforestation” is the direct
or indirect human induced conversion of
forested land to non-forested land
5. Effects
Deforestation has many
environmentally damaging side effects
including climate change
destruction of millions of species
the greenhouse effect(discussed in
upcoming slides)
6. ATMOSPHERIC DISTURBANCE:
Forests help in absorption of solar heat
during evaporation and transpiration.
• They help in maintaining carbon dioxide leve
and hence give a boost to plant growth.
EROSION CONTROL:
• They control the erosion of soil. They hold
soil by preventing rain from washing and
taking it away directly.
7.
8. GREEN HOUSE EFFECT
The Process by which atmosphere
gases absorb heat energy from the
sun and prevent heat from leaving our
atmosphere.
In other words, greenhouse gases trap
heat energy and keep it close to earth.
3 Main Greenhouse Gases: CARBON
DIOXIDE (CO2), Methane, and
WATER VAPOR
9.
10. CAUSES
1. CARBON DIOXIDE is added to the atmosphere
when people burn coal, oil (gasoline), and
natural gas FOSSIL FUELS, for transportation,
factories, and electricity.
2. Deforestation, or the clearing of forests, also
increases the amount of CARBON DIOXIDE in
the air because in photosynthesis plants take in
carbon dioxide and remove it from the
atmosphere, they make oxygen.
3. Methane is produced when garbage is buried in
landfills, from animal waste , and from other
natural sources.
11. GLOBAL WARMING
A gradual increase in the overall
temperature of the earth's atmosphere
generally attributed to the greenhouse
effect caused by increased levels of carbon
dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
12. Effects of Global warming
Melting glaciers
Forests, farms, and cities will face
troublesome heat waves, heavy
downpours, and increased flooding. All
those factors will damage or destroy
agriculture and fisheries.
plant and animal species extinction.
Allergies, asthma, and infectious disease
outbreaks will become more common due
to higher levels of air pollution.
