PHMSA/USDOT, IATA, and the IMO have all announced the mandated use of a new lithium battery mark for certain regulated packages containing lithium batteries. Prior to its date of implementation use of both the new lithium battery mark and the existing lithium battery handling label are allowed.

3. Lithium Batteries: The Regulations
The transportation in commerce of lithium batteries
are subject to the following regulatory agencies:
• Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety
Administration (PHMSA) within the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT).
• International Civil Aviation Administration (ICAO).
• International Air Transport Association (IATA).
• International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Label
• *Place for “Lithium ion battery” and/or “Lithium
metal battery”, as applicable.
• Text & symbols must be black on white or suitable
contrasting background.
• The hatching must be red.
• Mark must be a minimum of 120 mm wide by 110
mm high
• Hatching must be a minimum of 5 mm wide.
• If smaller packaging dimensions, may be reduced
to 105 mm wide by 74 mm high.

• Until December 31, 2018 either the Lithium
Battery Handling Label or the Lithium Battery
Mark may be used, as applicable.
• As of January 1, 2019 only the Lithium Battery
Mark may be used, as applicable.
• Each of the regulatory agencies has harmonized
their regulations to synchronize with the dates
indicated in this presentation.
• Not all packages of lithium batteries must display
the Lithium Battery Handling Label or the Lithium
Battery Mark.
