4. TEMPORAL FOSSA
■ Above: temporal line of frontal bone
■ Below : upper border of the Zygomatic arch laterally,
infratemporal crest of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone
medially.
■ Anterior wall: Zygomatic bones and parts of frontal and sphenoid
bone. (separate fossa from the orbit)
■ Floor: H shape suture formed by the fusion of 4 bones.
– Deep to pterion runs: middle meningeal vein, anterior division of
middle meningeal artery, stem of lateral sulcus of brain.

■ Temporalis muscle and its fascia
■ Deep temporal nerve and vessles
■ Auriculotemporal nerve
■ Superficial temporal artery

■ Roof: medially infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid ,
squamous part of temporal bone
laterally: incomplete as it communicates with temporal fossa
■ Floor is open:
■ Medial wall: lateral pterygoid plate , pyramidal process of palatine bone
■ Lateral wall: ramus of mandible
■ Anterior wall: posterior surface of maxilla, medial surface of Zygomatic
bone
■ Posterior wall: is open
