January 2024. Water Pollution, or Marine Pollution, is the contamination of water sources by substances making the water unusable for human activities, and disrupting aquatic ecosystems.
Water pollution sources include crop and livestock agriculture, municipal wastewater (sewage) treatment plants, chemical plants, nuclear power plants, solid and plastic waste dumping, oil tankers, and oil refineries. Water pollution affects both surface and groundwater. Water pollutants (contaminants) are classified based on their chemical, physical, biological, nutrient, and radioactive properties.
Water pollution negatively impacts human health, ecosystem stability, food chain safety, and economic growth. In addition, water pollution causes eutrophication, which occurs when nutrients from fertilizers encourage algae growth, decreasing oxygen levels and causing fish kills.
There are a number of ways to prevent and mitigate water pollution, such as effective wastewater treatment (sewage, industrial, and agriculture), stormwater management, soil and sediment erosion control, organic (chemical free) farming, use of biodegradable plastics, and water conservation.
Policy wise, in 1992, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), established the water convention and the protocol on water and health to protect and manage transboundary surface and groundwater. The water convention directly supports Sustainable Development Goal SDG6 Indicator 6.5.2.
In this slideshow, you will learn about the definition, sources, types, effects, mitigation strategies, UN policy, and global statistics of water pollution. For more slideshows on environmental sustainability, please visit s2adesign.com
7. GROUNDWATER POLLUTION
Occurs when Pollutants such as Pesticides and
Fertilizers Seep into Wells and other Places
from which Groundwater is Extracted Causing
it to Become Unsafe for Human Use.
SURFACE WATER POLLUTION
Affecting All Water Sources Above Ground
such as Rivers, Lakes, and Oceans. Primarily
Caused by Storm Water, Sewage, Farm Waste
Fertilizer Runoff, and Industrial Waste.
