4. • Drug discovery is the process by which potential drugs are discovered or
designed. In the past, most drugs have been discovered either by isolating the
active ingredient from traditional remedies or by serendipitous discovery.
Modern biotechnology often focuses on understanding the metabolic
pathways related to a disease state or pathogen, and manipulating these
pathways using molecular biology or biochemistry. A great deal of early-stage
drug discovery has traditionally been carried out by universities and research
institutions

10. Response to
COVID-19
• In November 2020 several pharmaceutical companies announced successful
trials of COVID-19 vaccines, with efficacy of 90 to 95% in preventing infection.
Per company announcements and data reviewed by external analysts, these
vaccines are priced at $3 to $37 per dose. The Wall Street Journal ran an
editorial calling for this achievement to be recognized with a Nobel Peace
Prize.
• Doctors Without Borders warned that high prices and monopolies on
medicines, tests, and vaccines would prolong the pandemic and cost lives.
They urged governments to prevent profiteering, using compulsory licenses as
needed, as had already been done by Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Germany, and
Israel.
• On 20 February, 46 US lawmakers called for the US government not to grant
monopoly rights when giving out taxpayer development money for any
coronavirus vaccines and treatments, to avoid giving exclusive control of prices
and availability to private manufacturers.

11. PHARMACOVIGILANCE
AND RISK MANAGEMENT
DEFINITION OF PHARMACOVIGILANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines pharmacovigilance as the science
and activities relating to the detection, evaluation, understanding, and
prevention of adverse reactions to medicines or any other medicine-related
problems. The definition and scope of pharmacovigilance have evolved to
recognize the importance of a systems approach for monitoring and improving
the safe use of medicines.
A simpler definition describes pharmacovigilance as the processes and science
of monitoring the safety of medicines and taking action to reduce risk and
increase benefit. Therefore, the assessment of benefit versus risk must begin
during the preclinical evaluation of a medicinal product and must extend
throughout its full life cycle. As a result, there is now added focus on safety
and risk assessment after a product has received regulatory approval, when it
is placed on the market and prescribed to large populations.

14. Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is the process of starting a business or other organization.
The term entrepreneur implies qualities of leadership, initiative,
management abilities, and business teambuilding. These are essential
attributes through which the entrepreneur develops a business plan,
acquires the manpower and other required resources, and is fully
responsible for its success or failure; most common option opted by the
dental graduates is a private practice and a few explore their career in dental
laboratories. Every practicing dentist will aspire in converting a private
practice into an enterprise, which is a challenging task. Many of the
practitioners have converted their private practices into an enterprise.
Success in private practice cannot be pointed out to one reason, but its
failure will have multiple reasons. There are various factors which must be
considered for successful conversion of a private practice into an enterprise
such as understanding the need of the society, mastering the treatment
skills, communication skills, updating knowledge and new trends, patient
satisfaction, mouth publicity, management of support staff, maintaining
professional network, and financial viability.
