After earning a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Dr. Bruce Hugh Dorman went on to earn an MD from the Duke University School of Medicine. For nearly three decades, Bruce Hugh Dorman, MD, has worked as a board-certified anesthesiologist, holding clinical positions in hospitals and teaching positions at medical universities. Alongside his day-to-day work, Dr. Dorman has maintained memberships in professional groups such as the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists (SCA). In addition to hosting educational events (including an annual symposium), the SCA helps members stay current in their fields by offering a variety of continuing education programs. The group also supports members' work through grant programs for cardiothoracic and vascular research projects. Each year, SCA awards two types of grants: the SCA/IARS Starter Grant and the SCA/IARS Mid-Career Grant. The former offers grantees up to $25,000 per year for 2 years, while the latter provides grantees with up to $50,000 per year for 2 years. Grant applications open every winter, and the awards are announced during the SCA Annual Meetings and Workshops, which are typically held in the spring. During the most recent grant cycle, the SCA awarded two starter grants and one mid-career grant to US-based researchers. Michael Mezzeffi, MD, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, received the 2020 SCA Mid-Career grant to study a treatment for acquired Von Willebrand Syndrome. The 2020 Starter Grant recipients were Matthew Barajas, MD, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Isaac Wu, MD, from Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Their projects are focused on ischemic post conditioning and transcatheter mitral valve repair, respectively.
