What’s Inside Intel? GE IP Software….
By: Doug McDowell, November 2013
As most people know, the Intel Corporation is the world’s largest manufacturer of microprocessors
that go into desktop and notebook computers, smartphones, tablets, and computer servers. With a
market share exceeding 80% and a 40 year legacy of achievement, Intel is a Silicon Valley
technology giant positioned for continued success.
What most people don’t know is that Intel’s manufacturing facilities throughout the world are run
by GE IP’s Proficy Cimplicity which enables operators and engineers to precisely monitor and
control every aspect of their environment, equipment and resources in their semiconductor
fabrication plants.
With an installed base exceeding $2M, and 2013 sales approaching half a million dollars, GE IP
software and support services performed so well, Intel began an initiative this year to replace
legacy Rockwell RSView at its global assembly/test facilities. Half the software has been purchased
this year with the remainder planned for 2014.
A new initiative to evaluate GE Energy’s Envisage software for energy management could threaten
the global installed base of Schneider Electric’s PowerLogic Ion at Intel. Cimplicity provides the
engine behind Envisage, so this collaborative effort between GE IP and GE Energy at Intel will drive
Cimplicity sales.
Next week, GE IP and Intel will engage in an executive briefing on cyber-security and mobile
applications. This is a fantastic opportunity to further showcase our unique capabilities.
Intel also procured GE IP services this week to support a pilot for Proficy Change
Management. Gimmi Filice and team will release a new back-end to replace MS SourceSafe to keep
this product viable. Intel implemented a change management solution from Rockwell 6 years ago,
2. but found that it does not meet its security audit requirements. In addition, Intel will be able to
control and audit versions of Siemens, Modicon, GE, and Rockwell PLCs, instead of just
Rockwell. Version control of Cimplicity will be a huge bonus.
We were able to achieve these results and initiate this momentum with a team of Will Doherty,
Tom Jensen, Clai Marshall, Gimmi Filice, Paige Pruitt, and Sean Childs. This was done through
centralized account management, streamlined communication, analytical rigor around contracts,
and energy building. Thanks to all involved!
