4. EVERYTHING IN THE UNIVERSE IS MADE UP
OF MATTER

6. PROPERTIES OF
MATTER
1. MATTER IS MADE UP OF TINY
PARTICLES
2. THE PARTICLES OF MATTER ARE
CONTINUOUSLY MOVING
3. THE PARTICLES ATTRACT EACH OTHER
4. THEY ARE ARRANGED IN DIFFERENT
WAYS
10. ● PARTICLES IN SOLID ARE TIGHTLY PACKED
● THERE IS NO SHAPE BETWEEN THE PARTICLES TO MOVE
AROUND
1. SOLIDS HAVE A FIXED SHAPE
2. SOLIDS HAVE A DEFINITE VOLUME
3. SOLIDS CAN NOT FLOW
SOLIDS
PROPERTIES
11. ● PARTICLES IN LIQUID ARE NOT AS
TIGHTLY PACKED AS IN SOLIDS
● THERE IS SPACE BETWEEN PARTICLES
TO MOVE AROUND AND SLIDE PAST ONE
ANOTHER
1. LIQUIDS CAN FLOW, THEY CAN BE
POURED
2. LIQUIDS DO NOT HAVE A FIXED SHAPE,
TAKE SHAPE OF CONTAINER
3. LIQUIDS HAVE A DEFINITE VOLUME
LIQUIDS
PROPERTIES
12. ● PARTICLES IN GASES ARE LOOSELY
PACKED
● THEY RANDOMLY MOVE AROUND
1. GASES HAVE NO FIXED SHAPE
2. GASES FILL UP THE ENTIRE SPACE IN
THE CONTAINER THEY ARE IN
3. EXAMPLES - OXYGEN, CARBON
DIOXIDE, HYDROGEN
GASES
PROPERTIES
15. Matter changes it’s state on HEATING &
COOLING
● Solid into liquid – The process of
conversion of a solid into liquid on heating
is called MELTING.
● Liquid into gas – On heating water starts
turning into gaseous form called water
vapour or steam. This process of
conversion of a liquid into gas is called
EVAPORATION.
16. ● Gas into liquid – When the water vapour
cools down it turns into water. This
process of conversion of a gas into liquid
is called CONDENSATION.
● Liquid into solid – When water is cooled in
freezer it turns into ice. This process of
conversion of a liquid into solid is called
FREEZING.
17. FUN TIME! – Lemonade Activity
● Salt/Sugar and water are mixed together. They make a SOLUTION.
salt + water salt solution sugar + water sugar solution
● A SOLUTE is a substance that dissolves in a liquid. Here salt and sugar are
solutes.
● A SOLVENT is a substance, usually a liquid, in which a solute dissolves.
Here the solvent is water.
● When a solute dissolves in a solvent, a SOLUTION is formed.
18. FUN FACT!
● Aerated drinks, like Pepsi,
Coca-cola, Limca, etc. have
Carbon dioxide dissolved in
them which gives the drinks a
fizzy taste.
● All aquatic life is possible
because Oxygen is dissolved in
water. Aquatic plants and
animals breathe in oxygen
dissolved in water to survive.
