2. MTV – Who are they?
MTV is an American cable and satellite television channel which is owned by Viacom Media
Networks (a division of Viacom) and headquartered in New York City.
Started on August 1, 1981, the channel originally showed music videos as presented by
television personalities known as "video jockeys" (VJs). In its early years, MTV's main target
demographic was audience was young adults, but today it is mostly towards teenagers, high
school students and college students.
The first music video shown on MTV was The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star", originally
only available to people in New Jersey. This was followed by the video for Pat Benatar's "You
Better Run". Sporadically, the screen would go black when an employee at MTV inserted a
tape into a VCR
MTV do not only show music videos as now they show things like reality TV shows as well as
documentaries to try and increase channel views.
A lot of big American artist like to have their music played on MTV such as Drake and Kanye
West as it is mass exposure for them and their music to go on and sell an impressively
amount of copies.
MTV predominantly only play American artists songs however if a overseas artist is making
big movements in the US they will play the song, for example Adele.
