Tennessee Valley Authority coal-fired electricity plant near the site of the former community of Paradise, in Muhlenberg County. TVA built the plant in the early 1960s, and the little village of Paradise coexisted with it until residents complained of smoke and flyash from the plant. To solve the problem, TVA exercised its power of eminent domain and condemned the town, bought out the residents, and razed all the houses and other structures. The town was located just out of frame on the left side of this picture, which was made in September 1997.
This episode in Muhlenberg County history was immortalized in the John Prine song, "Paradise". Foto 1997: Kentucky Photo File (CC:BY:NC:ND)
