3. The different types of film posters
• Some film posters will be different according to what
the genre of the film is.
• If it’s a horror film the poster must show darkness or
the cause of the film being a horror (the creature).
• In action movies they will present the main character
as heroic, brave and strong. Sometimes they have the
villain in the back looking evil.
• In drama they will present the main character as
innocent and the victim by also making the poster
lighter to show innocence.
• If it’s a Sci-fi movie they film poster will mainly be blue
to show futurism.
4. Where do the film posters get shown?
• Buses: Some film posters will put placed on movie objects
such as a bus because they travel to different area and is
constantly movie to catch the audiences attention.
• Billboards: Most of the time the bigger the billboard the
more attention the poster will attract and will become
more known. Sometimes they are on billboards on the side
of bus stops.
• Cinema’s : for people that go to the cinema if they see the
poster they will most likely want to watch or next time the
go to the cinema it will be the movie they want to watch.
• Magazines/ Newspapers: Since people do read magazine’s
and newspapers for the latest news, that would be the
perfect place to put the poster and advertise the movie.
5. Typical size for the poster
• Posters come in various sizes but the bigger
the better.
• Normally they are human size and a bit bigger.
• Sometimes when they are advertise on bigger
things they will be nearly the same size as the
object for example a bus.
6. How are the posters appealing to the
audience?
• Some posters depending on their genre will have
lots of various colours mixed with it catching the
audiences attention.
• Some posters like horror’s will have the creature
in the movie as the main attention of the poster
making the audience stare and wonder what it is.
• For Action movies the heroic character will be the
main focus grabbing the audiences attention
making them want to watch the movie.
• Posters always have the main thing as the centre
of attention in a poster.
7. Conventions
• Horror: Darkness, the creature haunting the characters, the character with a scared facial
expression, a symbol is seen in the movie or an abandoned place.
• Action: the main character looking heroic, the character fighting of whatever is happening,
the main character doing a stunt.
• Drama: the main character looking innocent, the main character and the background being
the cause of why the movie is dramatic.
• Sci-fi: the poster is normally very blue to show Futurism, aliens, spaceships, a weird creature
that is the main focus of the movie.
• Subtitles: Some of the subtitles will have a catchy phrase like for instance in horror movie’s
they will have something like ‘she is coming for you’.
• Titles and credits will have a font that fits with the genre of the movie. Sometimes subtitles
will have different colours like for Sci-Fi it might be blue or white.
• Dates: Most of the time when the movie doesn’t have release date yet they say ‘Coming
soon’.
• Awards: sometimes they will say what awards the movie gained or how many stars.
• Actors: they will have the name of the main 1 or 4 actors on the top of the poster.
• Age rating: the age rating will be on the bottom right of the poster or sometimes they wont
have it.
8. What is the difference of conventions
between different subgenres?
• They will take the main genre in the movie
and depending on the subgenre they will mix
the elements of the subgenre if it was a main
genre in the poster to make a difference.
• They might sometimes change the cliché
colours or how the characters are portrayed in
the poster.
