2. Meaning of Ambiguity
As per the dictionary
meaning ambiguity
means, “doubtfulness
or uncertainty of
meaning or intention”
One of "Jstor" article says
that ambiguity means,
“The quality of
distinguishing true
prudence from false”
Now the prudence simply
means, “The ability to
take right dicision”

 Mr. Allworthy
 Sophia
 Jenny Jones/ Mrs.
Waters
 Black George

4. Mr. Allworthy
 In the novel Allworthy shows as the wisest man
but his many decisions have less then good
results.
 Fault in guardianship of his sister.
 Make mistakes in judging character of,
 Captain Blifil
 Master Blifil
 Two tutors
 Jenny Jones
 Tom Jones

5. Sophia
 In the novel Sophia show as very obedient
and a girl who always concern for maintain
her reputation.
 She denies when it comes to her marriage.
 Run away from house.
 We can not say that Sophia is in control of her
thoughts and actions, there is always war
between prudence and love.

6. Jenny Jones/ Mrs. Waters
 She is not beautiful in look and people of town hates
her.
 Very clever and ambitious girl have hobby of reading
and also goes to learn from school master Mr.
Patridge but town women think it as an affair.
 Takes Bridget's blame on her head and also have
successful interrogation with Allworthy.
 Run away with an officer and Allworthy defines her
independent nature by giving name as "Slut”
 Better women then some who rigorously defend
their virtue. ( Sophia - Mrs.Waters)
 Devotion to whom she loves.

7. Black George
 Servant of Allworthy, Gamekeeper,Thief.
 Allworthy believes that behindTom’s bad
behavior George is the reason.
 Tom and George both steals but rules for
both is different.
 George never seeTom as bastard.

8. Squire western
 He is shows in novel as drunkard, ignorant of the
law, not a gentlemen, use rough language.
 He savesTom when he has fight with the tutor
and Blifil.
 Rescues Sophia from Lord Fellamar’s attempt of
rape.
 Loves money - allow Sophia to marryTom after
he get heir of Allworthy.
 No heroism in his act but his character and
situation made him the ideal person to carry
them out.

9. Tom Jones
 Consider him as bastard, have loose character, he
steals and drunk also.
 He steals to help Black George's family.
 When he is in London he is in worst situation then
Sophia then even doesn’t hesitate to donate all the
money he has received from Lady Bellaston to help
Mrs. Miller’s relatives.
 Has regret on his act when he comes to know about
pregnancy of Molly and about Mrs.Waters suppose
to be his mother.
 When Mr. Allworthy is sick he is the one who really
take cares of Allworthy.

10. Conclusion
There is always a two sides of coin and we have
to check both sides minutely to understand
any character.
