2. THEME DEFINITION
The main or central idea of a literary work.
Theme is different from subject matter in that, while
subject matter is something concrete at the centre of
the work, while theme tends to be abstract and
philosophical.
3. THEMES
The battle of good and evil in oneself.
Friendship acts as both a motivator and an enabler.
The roles of appearances in conveying a message.
The importance of curiosity in life.
The drawback caused by lies and deceit.
The fight against violence.
The differences in beliefs and religion.
The perception on women and femininity.
4. THE BATTLE OF GOOD AND
EVIL IN ONESELF
This is the novel’s biggest theme.
It acts as a metaphor about the existence of good
and evil in all men, and about our struggle with these
two sides of the human personality.
Whether or not good can be separated from evil, or
whether the two are forever intertwined is the big
question in this story.
5. FRIENDSHIP ACTS AS BOTH A
MOTIVATOR AND AN
ENABLER.
What hugely contributes in driving the plot forward
is the friendship in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
The friendship with Dr. Jekyll is the reason why Mr.
Utterson is determined to uncover the mystery of the
evil man.
In trying to unravel the secret, his many friendships
deliver crucial pieces of information.
6. THE ROLES OF
APPEARANCES IN
CONVEYING A MESSAGE.
In the novel, both figuratively and literally is meant in
appearances figure.
Albeit Dr. Jekyll has a lot of distasteful tendencies,
he definitely wants to keep up a socially acceptable
facade.
In a literal sense, the buildings in the novel reflect
the characters of the inhabitants. Dr. Jekyll has a
well-appointed house.
7. THE IMPORTANCE OF
CURIOSITY IN LIFE.
The characters are influenced by curiosity to seek
knowledge in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Characters may be viewed as passive or weak in
the story if they do not actively seek to unravel the
Jekyll and Hyde mystery.
In solving the puzzle along with Mr. Utterson, to
some degree, the characters’ curiosities are
transferred over to the reader.
8. THE DRAWBACK CAUSED BY
LIES AND DECEIT.
Secrecy and deception is what frequently drives the
plot forward in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Mr. Utterson doesn’t know the relationship between
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and he wants to find out.
The author allows our imaginations to run to
wild and eerie places by excluding the scenes of Mr.
Hyde’s supposedly crazy immorality.
9. THE FIGHT AGAINST
VIOLENCE.
Two crimes of violence are detailed in Strange
Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde against innocent
and helpless citizens.
Which are;
A. First, a little girl
B. Second, an elderly man
The question of whether or not violence is an
inherent part of man’s nature is raised, regarding the
violence in the novel centers on Mr. Hyde.
10. THE DIFFERENCES IN
BELIEFS AND RELIGION.
In Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, God
and Satan figures are prominent.
The men in the novel discuss various religious
works as part of their intellectual lives.
Mr. Hyde is frequently likened to Satan.
11. THE PERCEPTION ON
WOMEN AND FEMININITY.
Most female characters in Strange Case of Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are passive and weak.
The first female we see is a young girl mowed over
by Mr. Hyde.
The next woman we see is the maid who witnessed
the Carew murder. After watching Mr. Hyde beat the
man to death, she faints, waking up long after the
murderer is gone. She is a passive spectator.
