The IB Programme: Your Ticket To An
International Education
2. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is an organization founded in 1968by a group of teachers from
the International School of Geneva,Switzerland. They wanted to create an educational programme
that would help prepare students for college or university.
The IB Programme was developed to provide educational qualifications that are accepted by
international universities. The programme is ideal for students whose parents’ workmeans the family
is posted overseas in countries where the local education is in a different language or the teaching
standards and techniques are different. Studying for the IB means a student can move to another
school or country and not have to start learning a new curriculum.
The organization offers four educational programmes: The primary years for children ages 3 to 12;
the middle years for those ages 12 to 16, and the diploma and career-related programmes for teens
between 16 and 19.
3. IB Programme in the Philippines
Schools started offering the IB programme in the Philippines in 1975. According to the International
Baccalaureate Organization’s website, 21 schools in the Philippines offer the IB. Of this figure, four
offer the primary years programme, two offer the middle years and 20 offer the diploma.
Eleven universities in the country currently recognize the IB certificate. These universities have
altered the admissions policies to admit IB students to their courses.
Research on the IB Programme
Several studies have been conducted internationally on the effectiveness and benefits of enrolling
children in the IB programme. Many of these studies show that IB students tend to make a bigger
contribution to campus life and are more likely to complete their undergraduate degrees compared
to peers.
One study conducted in the UK showed that students holding an IB diploma were more likely to enrol
at a top 20 university compared to students holding an A-level qualification. Moreover, students
holding an IB diploma have a higher chance of receiving a first honours degree than an A-level
holder. IB holders are more likely to pursue further study six months after they complete their
degrees, the study found.
