Presentation by Tjitske Geertsema (Deltares, Netherlands) at the Delft3D User Days, during the Delft Software Days - Edition 2023 (DSD-INT 2023). Tuesday, 14 November 2023, Delft.
3. Introducing myself
3
• Specialist in between hydrology and hydraulics
• PhD entitled Water level and discharge dynamics in human-
affected lowland rivers
• Testing Delft3D FM 1D2D and (inter)national projects for
inland flood modelling
− From rainfall to rural/urban/river flooding
• Project leader for creating discharge statistics for the Rhine,
Meuse and Vecht river
− Modelling hydrology and hydraulics, which is used to
assess and design the dikes
• Product owner of D-Flow FM
− Collecting user stories
− Prioritize costumer requirements
4. Timeline
4
• 2023.02 – March 2023 → GA August 2023
• 2023.03 – July 2023
• 2024.01 – November 2023
• 2024.02 – planned March 2024
5. New features and improvements – 2023.02
2D3D
• GA 3D hydrodynamics:
− Including thermobaricity (shown by Firmijn) – alpha
status
• GA 2D D-Morphology:
− Improved sediment and morphodynamics
1D2D - beta
• 1D2D parallel and sequential models give same
results
• User Interface: improved error and warning
messages

6. New features and improvements – 2023.03
2D3D:
• Morphodynamic improvements: Flocculation and consolidation
• Restart improvements: Model with a general structure has almost the same results using a restart
file in comparison to continuing the model run
• Improved 3D hydrodynamics – Temperatures lower than 0 degrees C and investigations to create
less checkerboarding
1D2D - beta:
• Rainfall can be assigned in mm per interval specified in bc ASCII files
• User interface: optimized grid loading and bug fixes in Rainfall Runoff
6
7. New features and improvements – 2024.01
2D3D:
• Many low hanging fruit issues, such as:
− Error for unrealistic values for fixed weirs
− Single precision output for his-files
• User interface: Improved loading of models
1D2D:
• Correct freeboard output
• Supports Rainfall Runoff on Linux
• User interface: improved urban functionalities
7
8. Research result: improved long 1D2D links
• In river-floodplain applications, very long 1D2D links have been significantly improved.
Available as beta-functionality, still undergoing further validation.

9. Planned features and improvements – 2024.02
9
2D3D:
• NetCDF input for spatial-temporal processes:
− Offline wave coupling
− Periodic surface forcing
− Variable air density
1D2D:
• Improved statistical output: In addition to
instantaneous values (map/his/clm files), also
save average/min max values over time.
• Junction losses for manholes
• User interface: Rainfall Runoff improvements
and possibly performance improvements
