The Research paper ‘Resource Efficiency: a missed opportunity’ launched at the Manufacturing Leaders' Summit 2018. It highlights the good news that improving resource efficiency (energy, materials, waste and water) is a massive (and currently missed) opportunity for cutting costs and improving competitiveness and productivity – as well as being essential for tackling climate change. And the accompanying highly convenient truth is that it doesn’t require significant capital expenditure.

Research we commissioned, estimates there are
approximately 17.5m manufacturing sites in the
world and together they account for just over 1/3rd of
global energy demand and CO2e emissions.
Most of these sites are very small, but 850,000, have
between 10 and 500 employees on site, and
sufficiently large annual resource costs (energy, water
and materials) that they are under significant
financial, reputational and regulatory pressure to cut
costs, risks and their environmental impact.

4. RESOURCE
EFFICIENCY IS
A MISSED
OPPORTUNITY
Energy, material waste and water
often exceed 50% of a factory’s
input costs (and they are rising).
The very best managed sites improve
their nonlabour resource efficiency at
about 7% p.a., year on year, whilst
the average only improves at 1 to 2%
p.a. (This puts the latter at a growing
competitive disadvantage. For
manufacturers with tight margins, in
competitive markets, it’s getting
business critical.)

7. THE SOLUTION FROM
MANUFACTURE 2030
RESOURCE EFFICIENCY.
MADE SIMPLE.
The M2030 bee is an easy to use,
cloud-based, software tool that
makes it simple for manufacturing
companies to manage resource
efficiency projects (energy,
material waste and water) to
reduce costs and risks in their
operations.
It helps plant engineers and
management to access the
knowledge and management
tools required to implement safely
and easily, hundreds of small
resource efficiency projects that in
aggregate add up to significant
financial and CO2e savings.

7 actions completed, actual saving 8.3%/£89.6k
Examples:
Auto shutdown of idling compressors
Establish energy team
Put preventative maintenance plan in place for monthly, quarterly and annual lighting checks
