2. Determining the gravidity
and parity of a woman
entails an understanding of
the definition of “gravida”
and “para/parity”.
3. Gravidity – refers to the
total number of pregnancies,
past and present irrespective
of the outcome.
4. Gravida (G)– is a woman who is pregnant
(present) or has been pregnant (past).
Nulligravida (G0) – is a woman who is not
pregnant now or has never been pregnant.
Primigravida (G1) – a woman who is having
her first pregnancy.
Multigravida (G2 to G5) – a woman who has
had two or more pregnancies.
Grandmultigravida (G6 or more) – a woman
who has had 6 or more pregnancies.
5. Parity – refers to the total of number of
pregnancies in which the fetus or fetuses
have reached the age of viability and
subsequently delivered whether dead or
alive at birth.
Age of viability – is the age at which the
fetus is sufficiently developed in order to
survive extrauterine life. The legal
definition of age of viability is “20 to “28”
weeks of gestational age.
6. In the US and in more advanced nations
with highly sophisticated means and ways
to sustain life of very small and young
fetuses, any pregnancy carried to at least
20 completed gestational weeks or the
pregnancy ended in the delivery of an
infant weighing at least 500 g or more,
whether, born living or dead, it would be
included in the parity count.
7. REMEMBER:
a. The number of pregnancies is counted and
NOT the number of fetuses. Multiple
pregnancy therefore, DOES NOT increase the
parity. Twins and triplets would only be
considered as ONE delivery, therefore ONE
PARITY.
For example: Carla is pregnant for the first
time and is carrying twins.
She is presently
G1P0.
Granting that she has delivered her twins
reaching the age of viability (live or dead), she
would be considered
G1P1
8. Abortion –is NOT included in the parity count.
Abortion is the termination of pregnancy before
age of viability.
Parity will only include all pregnancies carried
to age of viability, meaning beyond the period
of abortion.
9. For example: Judy is pregnant for the second time
with her first pregnancy ending in abortion, Judy is
presently
G2P0
After Judy delivered fullterm or preterm, she
would be designated
G2P1
What if Judy’s second pregnancy did not reach the
age of viability and was aborted at 10 weeks?
Then Judy would remain to be
G2P0.
10. Whether the fetus is born alive or still at
birth, after viability is reached, DOES NOT
AFFECT PARITY.
For example: Susie is pregnant for the first
time
(G1P0).
After 41 weeks, she delivered a 6-lb-still
baby boy.
This makes her a primipara
(G1P1).
11. Primipara (P1) – a woman who has completed
one pregnancy to age of viability and
subsequently delivered whether living or dead
at birth.
Multipara (P2 to P5) – a woman who has
carried 2 or more pregnancies to age of
viability and subsequently born living or dead.
Grandmultipara (P6 or more) – a woman who
has had 6 or more viable deliveries whether
dead or alive at birth.
12. Gravidity
-refers to the number of pregnancies, irrespective of the
outcome.
Parity
- refers to the number of pregnancies that has (1)
reached the age of viability, and (2) subsequently
delivered, dead or alive at birth.
Age of viability
-the fetus has reached 20 completed weeks or more or
- the fetus has reached 500gms or more at birth
