HCS 334 Week 1 Assignment Physical Activity, Health, and
Wellness
Physical Activity, Health, and Wellness. For this assignment, you will
examine the relationship between physical activity and wellness by
reviewing available literature. Your paper must include the following:
To begin, review the “Physical Inactivity” section (pp. 57-59) of
Chapter 2 in Wellness: Concepts and Applications (8th ed.). Consider
highlighting the main concepts, taking notes, and/or outlining this
section to help solidify the concepts in your memory. After reading
and reviewing the section, answer the “Physical Inactivity Questions”
(available in your online classroom) and include the answers to these
questions as the first part of the paper you submit.
Next, select one published scholarly research study from the Ashford
University Library that evaluates the relationship between physical
activity and wellness. Remember to save a full-text PDF version of
this article for submission along with your assignment. In your paper,
you must describe the basic parts of your selected research study by
answering the following questions:
What was the research question that the authors set out to answer
through their study?
What

include a minimum of two scholarly sources (one may be your course
text, and the other will be your research study). Your paper and all
sources must be formatted in APA style as outlined in the Ashford
Writing Center.

Cardiorespiratory Assessment and Prescription. For this assignment,
you will assess your personal cardiorespiratory fitness level and
develop a cardiorespiratory exercise plan for yourself. If you are
unable to personally complete any of these tasks due to health
concerns, please contact your instructor immediately. For this
assignment, you will:
Examine and describe the relationship between cardiorespiratory
endurance and wellness using examples from your course text,
Wellness: Concepts and Applications (8th ed.), and at least one
scholarly article.
Assess your cardiorespiratory fitness level.

Case Study: Resistance Training. On pages 139-147 of your course
text, Wellness: Concepts and Applications (8th ed.),
Assessment Activities 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, and 4-4 describe how strength
and endurance can be assessed. After reviewing all four of these
assessments, select one of the case studies below for this assignment.
Next, assess the muscular strength and endurance status of your client
by addressing the following:
Case Study #1:
Laura is a 34-year-old woman who weighs 137 pounds. Laura is 65
inches tall, healthy, and does not have any known medical issues.
Her one-repetition maximum (1RM) for each of the following
exercises is as follows:
Biceps curl: 50 lbs.
Overhead press: 42 lbs.

Demonstration
Resistance Training Exercise Demonstration. Resistance training is
one mode of exercise prescription. The required reading from your
course texts this week highlights various resistance exercises, along
with pictures and a description for each exercise. For this discussion,
examine exercise prescription by selecting and demonstrating three
strength training exercises.
To begin, select one exercise for each of the major muscle groups
(lower, core, and upper body). Ensure that you choose different
exercises than those already selected by your peers; the goal of this
assignment is to compile a large assortment of exercises among all
class members. Therefore, do not hesitate to choose some of the less
common exercises.

Experiencing Flexibility Training. For this discussion you will
experience a type of flexibility training and reflect on your
experience.
To begin, select one of these practices: Tai Chi, Yoga, or Pilates.
Describe the benefits of your chosen practice and explain its
relationship to wellness.
Then, engage in one of these activities by taking a course at your local
gym, a recreation center, or a private studio. If you do not have access
to a live class, you may find a digital alternative such as a class from a
website, the on-demand channel on TV, a fitness video game, or a
DVD.
Be creative in finding a class. You may also check your local library

Case Study: Mrs. Smith
Your client, Mrs. Smith, just began training with you. She complains
of lower back pain and occasional neck pain.
She sits for extended periods of time at work in an ill-fitting chair.
She rarely exercises and always takes the elevator at work. Mrs.
Smith is overweight by 40 lbs., she drinks three large diet sodas every
day because she needs the caffeine to stay awake, and she smokes at
least four cigarettes a day (usually after meals or eating).
Examine the exercise mode of flexibility by addressing the
following:
• Describe how you would assess Mrs. Smith’s flexibility.
o Explain which flexibility tests you would select and explain your
choices. Refer to the Chapter 5 Assessment Activities from Wellness:
Concepts and Applications (8th ed.) as well as other scholarly
sources.
o Summarize the
who choose a different test. Were your peers’ approaches to helping
Mrs.
Smith similar to the approach you would take? Were their exercises
and prevention tips helpful? Can you think of anything to add to their
recommendations? Each peer response should contain at least 100
words.

Flexibility and Wellness Research. Flexibility has a large impact on
wellness. For this activity, you will examine the relationship between
flexibility and wellness and assess the factors affecting flexibility.
To begin, visit a wellness practitioner in your area and research the
top three complaints he or she receives relating to flexibility. Address
the following in your post:
• Describe the complaints and analyze possible causes.
• How do these complaints relate to the factors which influence
flexibility?
• Which prevention
to minimize flexibility-related complaints? Please be detailed and

Examine your exercise behaviors and habits before you began this
course.
Then, reflect on the knowledge you have gained over the last few
weeks and assess four specific fitness-
related goals that you have for yourself as a result of what you have

The Benefits of Being Fit — Community Presentation
Scenario:
Since you have a health and wellness background, your supervisor
asks you to give a presentation at the local library for a small group of
community members. Select one of the following audiences to use for
this project: elderly, youth, diabetics, obese, or individuals with
cardiovascular disease. The members of your group do not exercise
currently, and they are hesitant to do so. Therefore, your presentation
on the benefits of personal fitness must be convincing. For your
presentation, you must:
Explain what physical activity entails and examine its relationship to
fitness and wellness.
Describe your chosen group.
How many Americans are inactive, and what are the health
consequences of physical inactivity?
Utilize and cite relevant statistics to support your claims and findings.
Describe the benefits of a regular exercise routine.
