2. Camera
There are several long shots used to allow viewers to see both the audience
and the band, as each are equally important in the video. These shots are
effectively used as there are several instance through he video where the
band and audience dance together and convey a sense of carelessness
which is what the video is all about, this is done well here.
Also there are lots of mid shots used to let us see the band members
singularly but with their instruments letting us know which members do
what in the band. This suggests the band are very focused on people
acknowledging the music they make and with what instruments so they are
invested just as much ion their music as they are in the star image of
nirvana as ‘people’.
3. Editing
Slow Mo is a very prominent editing technique used several times throughout
the video to great effect. The effect it has important as it emphasises the
intensity of the dancing/head banging/mosh pitting that the Teens are
performing. Although it is already quite a claustrophobic atmosphere the slow
Mo effect creates the sense that the audience is there for longer and allows
them to see the ‘violence’ with more detail, this allows the representations
the visuals are trying to convey signify themselves more alongside the music.
The video repeatedly cuts from nirvana and the crowd allowing the viewers to
realise the similarities between the two and the equality that’s being
represented. This is effective as it further emphasises the message the visuals
and music work together to convey of teens getting enthused about
something, as nirvana try to tell them this.
4. Mise-En-Scene
The band and the crowd and wearing similar clothing once again conveying the fact they are equal.
The costume choice is varied with a plethora of casual clothing with different styles and colours.
This is a good choice as the video is set in a high school and high schoolers do in fact wear a variety
of different clothing, so this is accurate. The location chosen is quite obvious to anyone whose been
to a high school institution of some kind, it is a school gymnasium. This is an effective choice as a
gym is easily recognisable as a school location, which of course is important as the song is about
teenagers. These visuals are very effective as working alongside the music and respect the title of
the song.
