In this presentation we examine the Motion Waste in Six Sigma Quality Platform. When eliminating the Motion Waste, you gain efficiency, time, and money. This slide presentation also starts a conversation of 5S practices.
2. SIX SIGMA
Six Sigma is a quality program that, when all is
said and done, improves your customer’s
experience, lowers your costs, and builds
better leaders. –JackWelch
3. In this segment we will examine the third point of
Six Sigma, Motion.
What is the shortest distance between two points? Do your remember
this from your high school Geometry class? Painful enough I do. It is a
Straight Line.
When unnecessary motion is performed, time is wasted. As
an example, you serve 50 customers a day. You can assist a
customer in 45 seconds faster by eliminating unnecessary
steps. This time savings would provide an extra 37.5 minutes a
day. What could you do with that extra time?
4. A machinist programming a CNC machine desires precise cuts
with minimal movement to the next cutting point. Reducing
seconds with each cut turns into minutes which provides move
pieces cut during the day.
As waiter approaches the serving floor he moves in a certain
flow and direction. This movement allows him to serve his
customers efficiently and quickly. The result is the table turns
in 45 minutes instead of 60 minutes. This provides a
possibility for this table to be served 10 times instead of 8.
Extra money!
5. When reviewing the functionality of our credit card machine and
printer for our documents, both equipment pieces were several
feet away from the two counter salesmen. A credit card
machine was purchased for each salesman computer. The
printer was also moved in between the two counter salesmen.
Less steps resulted in quicker turnaround and happier salesmen.
6. Reduction of motion can be best defined by front line workers.
Motion is sort of improvement provides a great way to build a
continuous improvement culture within a company.
• Reduction motion waste looks like value added
work in many cases.
• Small motion waste adds up.
• Reducing motion waste is a gateway to bigger
improvement projects.
7. Many mechanics own their tools. Their tools will be arranged in a
certain order in each drawer. This allows them to always know where
a certain tool should be. Many mechanics are on a job time schedule,
so efficient performance is important.
In the Inventory slide we discussed how we could move
the top 20% volume sale parts closer to the packing
table. This adjustment requires less motion to complete
an order.
8. Small motion waste is extended by
implementing good 5S practices:
• Sort,
• Systematize,
• Sweep,
• Standardize, and
• Self-Discipline.
The 5S practices are covered in another
Slide Presentation called 5S Practices.
9. We have completed the
Motion section of
Six Sigma.
The next presentation we will examine Waiting.
