What is a suffix?
A suffix is a word part that is added at the end of a word that
conditions its usage or meaning.

INFLECTIONAL SUFFIXES
• -->inflectional (grammatical) (e.g. –ed, -ly, -‘s, -s, -er, -ed, -es, -
est, -ing: if it is used to turn a verb into e.g. present participle:
example: break -->breaking, eat-->eating)
EXAMPLES:
Adjective or Adverb: superlative degree, used when comparing
more than two things
warmest, shortest, fastest, luckiest, prettiest
Negative, not (contraction)

Students who understand how words are
formed, by combining, suffixes, tend to have
larger vocabularies because they will be able
find meaning in words they don’t know.
