2. MIXED TO
PERFECTION
O U R Q U E S T F O R Q U A L I T Y
A good chef knows that a successful dish is more than the sum
of its ingredients. The dish should bring out the best in each
ingredient, strike a balance between flavours and create something
special.
The same applies to recycled plastic. You can’t just mix any old
rubbish. Getting the ingredients right is crucial. Getting it wrong is
not an option.
There are no quick ways to become an expert. Over many years,
our engineers have found the best possible formulations and
developed materials with the highest specifications.
All of our plastics have been developed with specific functions in
mind. For example, a child’s sandbox needs to be different to a
paddock rail.
It’s also important that we manufacture all our products and raw
materials ourselves. It’s the only way to be sure that our standards
are met and our formulations are correct. As a result, our products
are only made in Germany and the UK under strict control.
The right ingredients, tested formulations and strict quality
control: we’ve been following these principles since we started in
1993. They are the backbone of the company and they enable us
to innovate, develop and bring products of the highest quality to
market.

7. Ulrich Kossin spent much of his career as the head of an
accounting practice in Vreden, Westphalia. His insight into
business gave him a unique view of a changing world. By
the early 1990s, he realised that some of the best investment
opportunities lay in future-oriented companies.
When packaging legislation was introduced in Germany
in 1991, Ulrich Kossin saw the potential for an exciting new
business sector. He took a leap of faith and founded HAHN
Kunststoffe GmbH in 1993. The new company was based
in Hunsrück, more than 180 miles from Ulrich’s home in
Münster.
The early years were not easy. As a pioneer in the recycling
industry (making packaging materials), Ulrich faced huge
challenges. There was no steady supply of raw materials and
production techniques were under-developed. The industry
was starting from scratch and there were no market-driven
products or sales channels.
Ulrich Kossin developed all these on his own. He invested
huge sums of his own money into the company, not to
mention his patience, hard work and perseverance. His
courage eventually paid off and HAHN Kunststoffe became
the market leader for recycled finished parts. Today, we
remain faithful to the tradition of Ulrich Kossin and continue
to grow.
HAHN Kunststoffe GmbH has over 20 years of history.

11. Products made of hanit® are
very environmentally friendly.
Our products do not damage or
contaminate the environment.
Our raw material is used plastic. Although that sounds
simple, the market for used plastic is extensive, growing and
surprisingly complicated.
There is a huge variety of used plastic on the market and we
need to choose our ingredients very carefully. hanit® is about
quality and consistency - our reputation depends on it. To
maintain these high standards we only buy from suppliers
we can trust. We never compromise on quality.
To make things even more complicated, not all of our
products are the same. They all have their own requirements
and properties; so ingredients differ too. Our buyers have
in-depth knowledge of which used plastic is needed for each
of our products.
No matter what material we use or which product we’re
making, whether recycling or manufacturing, we keep
emissions low. Our commitment to the environment will
never change.
That‘s one of the reasons why we’re the first company ever to
be awarded the “Green Angel” recycling award.

12. WHERE’S THE CATCH?
THERE ISN’T ONE.
DURABILITY
Each material has its advantages. Unfortunately, it also has its drawbacks.
Wood, for example, is attractive but it can’t withstand the rain and cold for long. Time-consuming
maintenance helps, but wood can’t last forever. Concrete, is very durable but it’s just too heavy for
many applications. Concrete is difficult to transport and as years go by, dirt and water marks take their
toll. It can also crack in cold weather and flake. Steel, on the other hand, is incredibly versatile but you
have to think about rust - and stainless steel is expensive. The same can be said about new plastics,
not to mention the impact on the environment.
And then there‘s hanit®.
Unlike wood or steel, weather isn’t a problem for hanit®. As it’s lighter than concrete and cheaper
than steel, it’s easier on the back and the budget! But best of all, virtually any product can be made
out of this high-tech material. Thanks to its unique composition, hanit® can be adapted to almost any
application.

» Simple adjustments can be

15. hanit® has many advantages. It’s weather-resistant,
chemical-resistant and splinter-free. It’s also maintenance-
free which makes it unbeatable when comparing price with
performance.
The uses for hanit® are virtually unlimited. It’s no wonder
that over 2000 products now bear the hanit® name. Its uses
include: patios, planters or palisades for horticulture and
landscaping; street furniture for the public realm; flooring,
panels and profiles for industrial construction; mud tables
for playgrounds; or posts for pasture fencing and paddock
rails.
All these products differ, not only in the way they are made
but also in their composition. For example, a sandbox does
not require steel reinforcement but a bench plank does.
When used in agriculture, hanit® needs to be exceptionally
robust and resistant to acids and brines. For cable duct
cover plates, load stability is essential. We develop the
products and formulations accordingly.
We take great pride in meeting the individual requirements
for each application and product. This is what makes hanit®
so exceptionally resilient and efficient.

16. hanit® has always been synonymous with strength and
durability. It handles stress perfectly and is ideal for tough
everyday applications. With or without reinforcement,
hanit® products are extremely durable.
But what about those profiles that are subjected to extreme
stress and the toughest conditions? Take a look at hanit®
Ultra - the strongest of all hanit® formulations.
hanit® Ultra’s specially developed formulation is both
unique and exceptional. Its combination of high quality
polyolefins and other additives gives it outstanding
strength. The tensile strength and the elasticity coefficient
(e-module) are 60% higher than standard hanit® – but the
cost is not.
The properties of hanit® Ultra can even save on project costs
or offset additional spending. For example, a board made
of hanit® Ultra can span larger gaps thanks to its strength
and increased rigidity. Think about it: stronger boards mean
fewer posts.
What is more, hanit® Ultra’s purity gives it an attractive
wood-like grain. The colour is even more consistent and
the high quality finish gives hanit® Ultra its distinctive
appearance.
hanit® Ultra combines superior resistance to bending stress,
tensile strength and tensile extension with outstanding
aesthetics. Ultra strong. Ultra beautiful.

18. Do we just melt down a few yoghurt pots and make a park bench?
It’s not that easy.
HAHN Plastics Ltd. is a high-tech company. This means investing in research
and development and constantly upgrading our machinery and laboratory
equipment. We also make sure that our product range is not limited to just a
few standard lines. We currently offer more than 2000 products and we owe
much of this to our customers. They are always making suggestions, proposing
modifications, asking for variations and coming up with ideas. Our product
range is constantly growing thanks to dialogue with our customers.
This relationship is also the basis for many custom-made products. Our
customers often have requirements that cannot be met with a standard
product. This requires custom work and the knowledge and expertise of
our mechanical engineers.
Such customisations are only possible because HAHN
Plastics Ltd. do everything in one place – from raw
material selection to production. That is why we
do not subcontract abroad. Quality cannot be
outsourced.

High-speed band saws and
circular saws with slightly crossed
teeth, preferably carbide-tipped,
produce the best finish.
Quickly remove any shavings
to avoid smearing the plastics.
Lengths can also be shortened
using a chainsaw, however, it is
necessary to consider a loss of
accuracy.
Spiral bits with a helix angle from
20° to 30° peak angle from 110°
to 120° can almost always be
used. Relaxation strokes should
occasionally be used, especial-
ly with larger drilling depths, to
avoid high frictional heat.
Angle grinders are not suit-
able for cutting due to their
high speed. Plastic parts, which
exhibit burrs or edges following
machining, can be processed
with an angle grinder.
Standard planes can also be used
to process plastics. The surface is
largely dependent on the feed
rate, cutting speed, clearance and
cutting angle and the condition
of the machining blade.
The span cross-section should be
as large as possible to keep the
machining heat relatively low.
Depth of cut and feed rate should
be high, the cutting speed on the
other hand low. To increase the
tool life, we recommend using
routers with indexable carbide
inserts.

When bolting recycled profiles together, the profile to be fastened
must be pre-drilled (e.g. boards, dock planks, square profiles).
The hole must be larger than the bolt. Elongated slots are recom-
mended to account for the temperature-related expansion of the
material.
hanit® products can be nailed both conventionally and with
nail guns. Due to the compact surface, it is, however, more
difficult to penetrate the profiles than it would be with wood.
Consider this when fixing.
If profiles are hammered, we recommend using a ram or a corner
protector to prevent damage to the product.
Boards, thresholds, and square profiles must not be press-fitted.
The profiles may exhibit length variations of +/- 1.5% due to tem-
perature fluctuations. An expansion distance (expansion joint)
must therefore be maintained during installation.
Recycled profiles are only partially paintable due to their
properties. Good results have been obtained using permanently
elastic plastic paints (all-weather paints) together with a rough-
ened surface and priming. Permanent paint adhesion cannot
be guaranteed.
Sunlight affects the profile alignment, and can, for example, cause
fence posts to tilt. To prevent profile distortion caused by sunlight,
the profiles should not be stored loosely.
Compared to wood or metal products, plastic has lower stiffness
and greater flexibility. These special material properties must be
observed accordingly when planning distance between supports
in dock, fence, and patio construction.
We have structural verification tests, installation recommenda-
tions, and mounting instructions for many products and applica-
tions. For more information please visit www.hahnplastics.com
TIPS FOR PROCESSING RECYCLED PROFILES
hanit® products can be processed as necessary with
conventional tools and machinery used in wood and
metal processing.
However, due to the properties of the material, some
specific features must be considered:
» In general, machining of profiles causes higher tool wear.
We therefore recommend the use of carbide-tipped tools.
» Recycled products have a closed surface. The core may
have a honeycomb structure, which becomes visible during
machining. This is due to the material properties.

to the Company any amount or claim whatsoever. In particular but without limitation, the
Purchaser may not set off any amount or loss or damage arising from alleged defects in

fluctuate prior to receipt of a firm order from the Purchaser. The Company will make all

liability for delay or non-delivery occurring for any reason whatsoever. Time of despatch or

2. The Company reserves the right to despatch or make delivery by instalments and to tender
a separate invoice in respect of each instalment.
3. Where an order is placed for Goods to be supplied to the Purchaser against time schedules

es of the Company.
2. So long as any money owed to the Company from the Purchaser is outstanding in respect

on the Company’s behalf until the total amount of the Purchaser’s indebtedness has been
discharged.
4. Until such time as the property in the Goods pass from the Company, the Purchaser will
upon request deliver up such of the Goods as have not ceased to be in existence or been
re-sold, to the Company. If the Purchaser fails to do so, the Company may enter any premis-
es owned, occupied or controlled by the Purchaser where the Goods or any item thereof is
situated and re-possess the Goods.
9. INSPECTION/SHORTAGES
1. The Company will have no liability for any damage or shortages that would be apparent on
careful inspection by the Purchaser unless a written complaint is delivered to the Company
within seven days of delivery, detailing the alleged damage or shortage and the Company

loss, injury or damage attributable thereto is confined to making good by replacement or
repairing any defects in the Goods themselves arising from faulty design or workmanship
on behalf of the Company.
2. The Company’s liability is further limited to defects reported to the Company in writing
within 14 days from the date of despatch of those Goods to the Purchaser by the Company.
47. 239For more information go to » www.hahnplastics.com
3. The Purchaser will assume responsibility for the Goods being of sufficient suitability and
quality for the Purchaser’s purpose.
4. The use of recycled materials can cause variations in the Goods, especially colour variation,
efflorescence, overflow ridges, pores, shrink holes and surface fissures, in respect of which
the Company accepts no liability whatsoever.
11. SAMPLES
1. Notwithstanding that any sample may be exhibited and inspected by the Purchaser to en-
able the Purchaser to judge the quality of the Goods, it will not constitute a sale by sample
under the contract.

be returned immediately on request.

months after the said circumstances have arisen, then either party may give written notice
to the other cancelling the contract and neither party shall be under any further liability to
the other except that the Purchaser will be liable to pay the contract price less a reasonable
allowance for what has not been performed by the Company.
13. SEVERANCE
If any term herein will be held to be void or unenforceable for any reason whatsoever, but
would be valid if part of the wording were deleted, then the term will apply with such modifi-
