2. OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT
⢠Social vices such as rape, sexual harassment,
domestic violence, gender discrimination are faced
daily by various people around the world, but in a
country like Nigeria where laws protecting her
citizens or prosecuting offenders are vague it
becomes necessary to delve into this issue.
⢠The life of every human is important irrespective of
oneâs gender. However, the overwhelming majority
of those affected by such insensate acts are girls (and
women), most of whom are in poor economic
situation.
⢠With the growing influence of social media the
voices of these victims can be heard, help rendered
and necessary actions taken against such act of
injustice.

3. COMMON SOCIAL ILLS FACED BY GIRLS/WOMEN IN NIGERIA
Early Marriage and Child Abuse:
While all children are absolutely important, the girl
child is vulnerable and this necessitates special
consideration. Child marriage is not a new
phenomenon in Nigeria as it has grown to be a
controversial issue in the economy.
Marriage, as recognized in the constitution is to be
undergone by adults from 18 years (and above),
however, there are marriages below 18 years, and this
is referred to as child marriage.
The case of child marriage in Nigeria is mostly
experienced in the Northern part. One of the most
worrisome and cruel issues faced by the girl child is
sexual abuse and this has exposed so many children to
early child bearing, health related issues such as
Vesico Vagina Fistula (VVF), HIV/AIDS and other
sexually transmitted diseases. Psychological and
emotional trauma are also negative outcomes
associated with child abuse and early marriage.

4. Domestic Violence:
Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence and
abuse, spousal abuse, and family violence, is often defined as the
physical and/or psychological abuse of an intimate partner. In
our understanding, however, domestic violence includes physical
and sexual abuse of children within a home, as well as economic
exploitation, intimidation, emotional abuse, coercion, threats and
isolation of intimate partners, and children. It is also a violation
of fundamental human rights. Fatalities occur frequently in
domestic violence in Nigeria.
Sexual Harassment:
Both male and female are exposed to sexual harassment at any
point in time, however, women are more susceptible. Sexual
harassment can be in the form of unwelcome sexual advances,
request for sexual favors, other verbal or physical conducts of
sexual nature that tend to create a hostile or offensive work
environment. Every day around the world, women are sexually
harassed. In Nigeria, because of customs and traditions, women
are afraid to speak out, they feel ashamed and are fearful of losing
their jobs if they bring sexual harassment to the attention of
authorities.

5. COMMON SOCIAL ILLS FACED BY GIRLS/WOMEN IN NIGERIA
Rape:
Rape is the commission of unlawful sexual intercourse (or
intrusion). It is forcefully having sex with someone against
his/her will, especially using violence. Although rape in
recent years is defined without reference to the sex of the
victim or the perpetrator, the overwhelming majority of
rape victims are women. Rape cases in Nigeria has become
an everyday crime; over 90% of predatory sex is
perpetrated by males against females. There is no age limit
regarding rape cases as children, babies, adolescents,
adults and aged women are being raped or defiled
recklessly.
Gender Discrimination:
Various forms of discrimination against girl children and
women are numerous and vary depending on the
traditions, history and culture of a particular society.
Females are subjected to multiple forms of oppression,
exploitation and discrimination due to their gender. These
forms of discrimination are still being exhibited in both
home and workplace in some parts of Nigeria.

6. CASE STUDY
With the continuous rise of social media, these
social ills faced by women and female children are
coming to forefront of the public. Opinions, verbal
attacks, protests and even court cases have sprung
as a result of social media participation.
Next are some highlighted controversial cases.
www.surkreo.com
7. Case 1: Sugabelly and Mustapha Audu (Issue
of Rape)
Sugabelly as sheâs fondly called claimed
Mustapha Audu (along with his brothers and
cousins) had molested and raped her against her
will at the age of 17 during a bitter-sweet
relationship.
This case was highly controversial as Mustapha
Audu is the son of late Abubakar Audu (former
governor of Kogi state), who was very prominent.
The Sugabelly/Audu case brought about different
views, some in Sugabellyâs Favor and others
against. Some influential personalities such as
Funmi Iyanda, Oby Ezekwesili aired their
opinions on the issue.

8. Case 2: Ese Oruru and Yunusa Dahiru
(Issue of abduction, child abuse and forceful
marriage)
The pathetic story of how 14-year-old Ese
Oruru, who was in August 2015, allegedly
abducted in Opolo, Bayelsa State, by one
Yinusa, who hails from Kano, has continued to
elicit outrage on social media among Nigerians.
Ese, who was 13 as at the time of her alleged
abduction, was taken to Kano, by Yinusa, where
he converted her to Islam and married her.
Nigerians, yesterday, took to the social media
to launch a campaign #FreeEse, calling for the
immediate release of the young teenager.
This case sprouted and important personalities
such as the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi,
Inspector General of Police got entangled in the
matter.

9. Case 3: Ese Walter and Popular Pastor of
COZA, Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo (Issue of
Sexual Harassment)
Social media went into a frenzy with this
written confessions from a lady called Ese
Walter, on her alleged affair with the senior
pastor of the Common Wealth Of Zion
Assembly (COZA), Biodun Fatoyinbo. In the
piece by Ese Walter, she alleged that she was
seduced by her pastor and she admitted to
having an affair with him. Ese stated that she
has since been plagued with guilt and an
extremely heavy heart as she constantly sees
her pastor preaching. Pastor Biodun, however,
never denied or claimed her committed all
atrocities. This became debatable as some are
of the opinion this is not a case of sexual
harassment.

10. IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON CULTURE AND COMMUNICATION IN NIGERIA
Social media has brought a vast amount of attention to
social and cultural ills. These can be seen in so many
cases as this medium is seen as one big family in
support of a victim and a single voice against
prosecutors. Nevertheless, social media is still a solid
ground for diverse opinions and a battlefield of people
at loggerheads and to a very large extent influenced
changes in culture and communication in Nigeria.
Social media is considered the ânew mediaâ in Nigeria
that speed up conversations in a more interactive way,
which makes communication more effective and
worthwhile.
On culture, SM* has formed a strong and confident
voice for people ready and willing to break past the
norm. These outdated norms considered as derogatory
to the right of children, women and the citizens as a
whole.

11. SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ISSUE OF CHILD MARRIAGE AND SENATOR YERIMA
Social media went ablaze when it came to the
publicâs attention that former governor of Zamfara
state, Ahmed Sani Yerima, sponsored a bill in the
Nigerian Senate that would recognize child brides as
adults, effectively legalizing marriages to minors.
Senator Yerima created widespread controversy in
Nigeria few years earlier when he married a 13 year
old Egyptian girl (whom he divorced few years later
to marry another 15 year old girl), sparking a fierce
debate about child marriage laws. Numerous
women's rights and human rights groups called for
his prosecution for pedophilia and child abuse. He
has passionately opposed the deletion of the section
of the 1999 constitution which pegs the official
marriage age in Nigeria at 18 years, saying it is âun-
Islamicâ.
Child protection groups have repeatedly called for
his removal and prosecution as his antics contravene
every human rights convention on the rights of
children.

horrid experiences as a result of rape, child

experience with people and all this within a period
of 30 days.
The purpose of this project is to give a voice to the
helpless victims of such negative acts by attracting
the attention of the public, thereby creating a
unified stand against the prosecutors.

worse situations and attract necessary bodies to
assist these victims.
