![POSITION PAPER OF NIGERIA<br />It is estimated that one in every five women faces some form of violence during her lifetime, in some cases leading to serious injury or death. Both traditional religion and Islam allow having more than one life partner, and women cannot expect faithfullness from their husbands. Even Christianity, while emphasizing marital faithfullness and having one life partner at a time, expects the submission of women to their husbands.<br />Discussions of sexuality are considered improper for girls and women, throughout their lives, women are expected to bear suffering and humiliation in silence. Right from the birthplace, this is the life to which girls are groomed. Thus, from fear of castigation, rejection, and shaming, most women suffer any venereal diseases, including HIV/AIDS, without a word. Nigerian women have to sacrifice a lot to keep the holiness of marriage, to avoid reproval and dishonour, and the disgrace of divorce. <br />Nigeria believes that this is a huge problem in this country and that they have to solve this problem somehow. Nigeria thinks that women contribute to making Nigeria a more peaceful country, which is very important. <br />The problem of violence against women has been drawing increasing political attention. To promote women's rights and strengthen their role in economic, social, political and cultural life. Legal measures are being adopted towards the elimination of violence against women. The establishment of special courts to deal with violence is envisaged.<br />The UN has a mandate to collect and analyze comprehensive data and to recommend measures aimed at eliminating violence at the international, national and regional levels. The mandate is threefold:<br />To collect information on violence against women and its causes and consequences from sources such as Governments, treaty bodies, specialized agencies and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and to respond effectively to such information;<br />To recommend measures and ways and means, at the national, regional and international levels, to eliminate violence against women and its causes, and to remedy its consequences;<br />To work closely with other special reporters, special representatives, working groups and independent experts of the Commission on Human Rights.<br />Some of the Resolutions to this matter:<br />,[object Object]](https://image.slidesharecdn.com/positionpaper-100412222403-phpapp02/85/Position-Paper-1-320.jpg)
