2. Sheffield Hallam
I would say that Sheffield Hallam is my main choice for a couple of factors. One factor that really sold me on
Sheffield is something that you could say is quite small and simple, but I really liked the fact that all the software
that is available to you for the course, for example premiere pro, you were able to use outside of the university.
So if I wanted to use some of my own time outside of course hours and didn’t want to travel into the University, I
would be able to work from my dorm on my own PC. Another factor that really appealed to me was the
equipment that was available to offer. It was in fact one piece of equipment that stood out to me. They showed
us that one of the pieces of equipment that they had to offer was an Arri-cam which is very commonly used
camera in the cinema industry and mor specifically some cinematographers that I very like, equalling that to be
a big selling point to me. Another factor that is relatively quite simple was that I already know that I like
Sheffield as a city, it has some qualities that work very well for me, that being a very creative city, having a large
vegetarian population and a great mountain bike hub. Yet the last factor not being as important as the other, it
still is important to consider as going to university would mean moving there.
3. Aesthetica Trip
Looking back on the Aesthetica trip I can say that I really enjoyed myself and that I would really like to go back again. I really
enjoyed watching projects that were closer to my level of production value compared to something like a feature film on a big
screen, I found it was very confidence inspiring as being able to see people’s work that is to a closer skill level as your own
makes you realise that getting into the industry is easier than expected. It was also good for inspiration, I realised especially
whilst watching the ‘drama’ films that to create a good film you don’t need to write an unbelievably deep, complex and
interesting story. Even if you have a pretty simple story, if you can pair that with good technical skills I realised it can make a
very interesting film which was really good for me to realise because I’ve felt as if my story writing is something that I need to
improve on. Another factor that I really enjoyed about it was that because of the way the festival is, you end up surrounded by
like minded people and you can easily converse with anybody because there’s instantly something you can talk about. It’s nice
to be surrounded by people with the same ideas as you but as well as people that approach what you watched differently. It
easily opened debates that were certainly interesting because you could be talking to someone about the same film but they
would approach it from a different angle, for example if I were to talk about the visuals and say how aesthetically pleasing it is,
someone else could talk to you about the story. I really enjoyed my time at the film festival and I would really like to go back.
