Forces
Definition of a Force
This is anything that when applied to an object alters the
object’s state of inertia thus creating a push or pull effect. Its
S.I. unit is the Newton(N).
What Do Forces do?
Here are some of the effects which forces have
on objects which they push or pull:
1. Forces get objects moving and cause
acceleration.
2. Forces stop moving objects and cause
Deceleration.
3. Forces change the direction in which objects are Moving.
What Do Forces do?
(cont’d)
4. Forces stretch objects.
5. Forces squash or compress objects.
6. Forces bend or distort objects.
7. Forces turn or twist objects.
8. Forces prevent movement of objects by balancing other
forces acting on the same object
Contact Forces
1. Frictional force.
2. Tensional force.
3. Normal force.
4. Applied force.
5. Spring force.
Applied force.
An applied force is a force that is applied to an object by a
person or another object.
Normal force
The normal force is the support force exerted upon an object
that is in contact with another stable object.
Frictional force
Frictional force is the opposing force exerted by a surface as
an object moves across it.
Tensional Force
The tension force is the force that is transmitted through a
string, rope, cable or wire when it is pulled tight by forces
acting from opposite ends.
Spring force.
The spring force is the force exerted by a compressed or
stretched spring upon any object that is attached to it. An
object that compresses or stretches a spring is always acted
upon by a force that restores the object to its rest or
equilibrium position.
Action-at-a-Distance Forces (non-contact
forces):
1.Gravitational Force (attractive only).
2.Electrical force (may be attractive or repulsive).
3.Magnetic force(may be attractive or repulsive).
4.Nuclear forces (attractive only).
Nuclear force
The nuclear force (or nucleon–nucleon interaction or
residual strong force) is the force between two or more
nucleons. It is responsible for binding of protons and
neutrons into atomic nuclei.
Electric Forces.
This exist between electric charges, between electric fields
and electric charges, or between electric fields.
Magnetic forces
These are forces that exist between two electrically charged
moving particles of magnetic poles
What is the force required to stretch a spring whose constant
value is 100 N/m by an amount of 0.50 m?
