The document provides information about the third conditional and reported questions in English grammar. It begins by explaining that the third conditional talks about hypothetical situations and conditions in the past that did not happen. It then provides examples of the third conditional structure. The next sections discuss understanding meaning practice with matching exercises and word order practice filling in gaps. The document concludes by reviewing the use and form of reported questions, including changing pronouns, tense, time, and place. It provides examples of changing yes/no and WH-questions into reported speech.

3. Third Conditional use and form
• The first conditional and second conditionals talk about the future. With the third
conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that
did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third
conditional is also like a dream, but with no possibility of the dream coming true.
EX:
• Last week you bought a lottery ticket. But you did not win. :-(
4. Understanding meaning practice
• 1. Check your understanding: matching Match the two sentence halves and write a–g next
to the numbers 1–7.
5. 2. Check your grammar: word 2 word. Write the
words in the correct order to make sentences.
9. Use and form
We usually introduce reported questions with the verb "ask":
• He asked (me) if/whether... (Yes/no questions)
• He asked (me) why/when/where/what/how... (Question-word questions)
As with reported statements, we may need to change pronouns and tense (backshift)
as well as time and place in reported questions.
But we also need to change the word order. After we report a question, it is no longer a
question (and in writing there is no question mark). The word order is like that of a
normal statement (subject-verb-object).
Do you want lunch? They asked:
They asked us if we wanted lunch.
They asked us whether we wanted lunch.
