Practice on 3rd Conditional
and reported questions
11TH GRADERS
Third Conditional use and form
• The first conditional and second conditionals talk about the future. With the third
conditional we talk about the past. We talk about a condition in the past that
did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this condition. The third
conditional is also like a dream, but with no possibility of the dream coming true.
EX:
• Last week you bought a lottery ticket. But you did not win. :-(
Understanding meaning practice
• 1. Check your understanding: matching Match the two sentence halves and write a–g next
to the numbers 1–7.
2. Check your grammar: word 2 word. Write the
words in the correct order to make sentences.
3. Check your
grammar: gap
fill Complete the
sentences using
the third
conditional.
Reported questions 
REVIEW
Use and form
We usually introduce reported questions with the verb "ask":
• He asked (me) if/whether... (Yes/no questions)
• He asked (me) why/when/where/what/how... (Question-word questions)
As with reported statements, we may need to change pronouns and tense (backshift)
as well as time and place in reported questions.
But we also need to change the word order. After we report a question, it is no longer a
question (and in writing there is no question mark). The word order is like that of a
normal statement (subject-verb-object).
Do you want lunch? They asked:
They asked us if we wanted lunch.
They asked us whether we wanted lunch.
Let’s practice: Yes/no reported questions
1. Is Javiera at home?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
2. Am I late?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
3. Is it cold outside?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
4. Are they in Coquimbo?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
5. Is the bus stop near the shopping centre?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
6. Do you like Lady Gaga?
She asked me if __________________________________________________
Let’s practice: WH reported questions
1. “Where is he?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
2. “What are you doing?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
3. “Why did you go out last night?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
4. “Who was that beautiful woman?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
5. “How is your mother?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
6. “What are you going to do at the weekend?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
7. “Where will you live after graduation?” She asked me
______________________________________________________
