The people in rural areas of Karnataka and Kerala mainly depend on agriculture for their livelihood. The main crops grown are Arecanut and coconut. The Arecanut crop has been a major cash drop for about centuries. Major experts from India to other western countries has boosted for many year’s economy till now. But cultivation of Arecanut is very unpredictable. Arecanut is prone to many diseases like bud rot, fruit drop, stem rot etc. Fruit drop may be due to the disease koleroga caused by fungus or yellow leaf disease or due to soil conditions such as water stress in spring. It is therefore recommended that studies be made to find the cause of the problem and their control measures made aware. The onslaught of pest and various other diseases in the areca nut plantation has caused the production to dwindle. Due to the height of the tree, it is somewhat difficult to spray the pesticide on to it. Presently, climbers climb and spray the pesticide on to the tree but presently there is an acute shortage of skilled climber’s .Hence this method is exhausted too. Besides, it is also dangerous to climb these trees during monsoon season, due to the slippery nature of the trunk. This has created a requirement for development of such equipment that can climb the tree in any climate, condition and perform the required function. Hence attempt was made to design and fabricated a unit that does the purpose.

3.  Agriculture is one of the major sectors of
Indian economy
 Of many cash crops produced in India, areca
nut is the most important one.
 Especially in the rainy season, the areca nut
attacked by the fungus at the tree top.
 Tree climbing is risky job during monsoon
 Hence an attempt is made to design and
fabricate unit that serves this purpose

of a man in ground itself.

 It should be light in weight.
 It should be Easily detachable from the tree.

designed keeping in mind all the problems
that a cultivator faces
 The user operates the machine by using a
remote control in his hand
 The climber is fitted with a pesticide sprayer
on it after it reaches the desired height
 the sprayer can be activated to spray the

12.  This is the major part of the climber assembly
in the second prototype
 Material of the plate is acrylic
 size is 13X13 inches and 4mm in thickness
 Four16mm slots are drilled onto this plate.
 The composite sheet is used because it is
light in weight and stronger in strength

14.  The roller assembly consists of three rubber
wheels mounted on the same shaft
 2 bigger wheels of 60mm and one small
wheel of 50mm diameter is used
 The wheels are fixed to the aluminium hollow
shaft of 15mm diameter

provided in the composite plate
 as the spring is loaded to these rollers they
hold the tree trunk tightly

16.  The motor we are using is a low speed DC
motor
 it is a 12 VOLT, 4AMP motor having a speed
of 30RPM.
 Weight of the motor is 1kg.

18.  The sprayer we have used is a wiper sprayer used
in four wheelers.
 Sprayer pump is powered by the same battery
which is used for motor.
 The sprayer unit is fixed to the plate which is in
opposite direction of the motor

26. We conclude that the motorized arecanut tree
climber is a safe, reliable, efficient and
automatic tree climber which reduces the
problems in climbing the arecanut tree to a
