Week #1
Immigration vocabulary:
Persecution (noun): The act or practice of treating a person or group unfairly or cruelly
because of their religion, gender, political beliefs or race.
Refugee (noun): a person who leaves his or her home because of war, danger, or
natural disaster and seeks safety somewhere else.
Migrate (verb): to move from one country or region to settle in another.
Questions for Review:
1. Why do you think we have persecution in this world?
2. What would be one problem you would face if you were a refugee?
3. If you could migrate anywhere in the world after Thailand, where would you go?
Meta-cognition vocabulary
Comprehend It is important for me to comprehend my reading material.
Comprehension I am working to improve my reading comprehension this year.
Comprehensible It is important for students to read material that is easily
comprehensible.
Incomprehensible His answer was totally incomprehensible to me.
Roots, prefixes and suffixes vocabulary
im is a prefix; it is a variation of in used before b, m and p. It means either “not, opposite or,
without” (immobile, impossible) or “in” (immigration, implant).
port is a root word meaning carry e.g. transport, portable, portage, report
bio is a root word meaning life e.g. biography, autobiography, biology, antibiotic.
2. Examples to include in vocabulary review:
Describe how you would transport a reluctant elephant from Northern to Southern Thailand.
