Learning Disability
There are a wide range of disabilities in children and one of the most significant is learning disability. This disability primarily affects effective learning making the performance of the children relatively poor. The diagnosis of this disability should take place when the child is relatively young. It is much easier to work towards eliminating the symptoms of learning disability when they are few and less complex and this is when a child is relatively young. No one wants to be an “alarmist” and put her child through an evaluation for trivial or transient bumps along the road to reading. Evaluations can take time, and those carried out privately can be expensive. Most parents and teachers delay evaluating a child with reading difficulties because they believe the problems are just temporary, that they will be outgrown. This is simply not true. Learning disability are not outgrown, they are persistent. Children who struggle poorly in preschool continue to have problems in the future. What may seem to be tolerable and overlooked at a young age certainly won’t be in a high grade level. Without identification and proven interventions virtually all children who struggle with difficulties with assessments early on will struggle there whole life.
