  2. 2. What Happens When Fear Gets in The Way? <ul><li>You feel as though you are going in circles </li></ul><ul><li>You beat yourself up with negative “self talk” </li></ul><ul><li>You become paralyzed – afraid to make the “wrong” decision </li></ul>
  3. 3. Why Is Change So Difficult? <ul><li>We’re in habitual behaviors </li></ul><ul><li>We live by our perceptions – our “story” </li></ul><ul><li>We want to stay with what is familiar and comfortable </li></ul><ul><li>We don’t trust our own instincts </li></ul>

What Triggers the Fear? <ul><li>Fear has been called, “False Expectations Appearing Real” </li></ul><ul><li>It’s part of a natural “fight or flight” response to possible danger </li></ul><ul><li>A bad past experience can trigger bad or fearful feelings causing us to stop doing what is making us uncomfortable </li></ul>
  6. 6. What’s Your Story? <ul><li>“ I’ve always struggled and I always will.” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I had a tough childhood.” </li></ul><ul><li>“ Those people get all the breaks.” </li></ul><ul><li>Our “Story” describes the way we look at our experiences in the world. </li></ul>

What Keeps Us Stuck in Our Story? <ul><li>Using coping mechanisms such as over-working, drinking excessively, overeating, eating disorders, chemical dependency, etc. which leads to… </li></ul><ul><li>Tuning out or “sleepwalking” through our lives because we have… </li></ul><ul><li>Fear that we may have to change if we address certain issues in our lives. </li></ul>

Why Do We Take 1 Step Forward & 2 Steps Back? <ul><li>Our progress conflicts with our story. </li></ul><ul><li>We make one change, then fall back into old behaviors because we don’t maintain our new behavior. </li></ul><ul><li>In order to maintain our new behavior we have to be aware or what triggers us to return to old, comfortable behaviors. </li></ul>

Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward <ul><li>Use positive self-talk instead of beating yourself up </li></ul><ul><li>“ I always screw up!” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I may not have made good choices in the past, but I can make different choices right now.” </li></ul><ul><li>“ I tried that before and it didn’t work!” </li></ul><ul><li>“ That was a different situation and has nothing to do with this one.” </li></ul>
  11. 11. Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward <ul><li>Don’t blame yourself for what has happened in the past. </li></ul><ul><li>Accept where you are right now in your life. </li></ul><ul><li>Keep a journal and write down your current thoughts and feelings and goals for the future. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward <ul><li>See that change is a process and will take time. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t anticipate a result – you don’t know what will happen until it actually does. </li></ul>

Steps to Conquer the Fear & Move Forward <ul><li>Accept that discomfort is natural when you are doing something unfamiliar </li></ul><ul><li>Trust your “gut” instincts – if it feels totally wrong for you, don’t do it. If it’s just “stage fright” then the discomfort will be temporary and will disappear once you get started. </li></ul>

You don't have to see the entire staircase, just take the first step.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. </li></ul><ul><li>The fear will not disappear – instead learn to move through the fear in order to take steps toward your goals. </li></ul>
