The 99th Precinct of the NYPD welcomes a new commander, Captain Raymond Holt, who takes the job very seriously unlike the previous captain. This is a change for Detective Jake Peralta who enjoys taking a more carefree approach to police work. Holt gets to know his detectives, including the dedicated but emotionally unstable Sergeant Terry Jeffords and talented but rule-breaking Peralta. Detective Charles Boyle wants to ask the tough Detective Rosa Diaz on a date but struggles to do so, so he asks the sarcastic administrator Gina Linetti and immature but skilled Detective Jake Peralta for help.

The 99th Precinct of the New York Police Department in Brooklyn welcomes a
new commander, Raymond Holt who, unlike the former Captain, takes police
work very seriously, to the dismay of the talented but carefree Detective Jacob
Peralta, and the satisfaction of Detective Amy Santiago Holt gets to know his
detectives through Sergeant Terry Jeffords, his highly dedicated, but emotionally
unstable leader. Meanwhile, Detective Charles Boyle, a very committed but not
physically gifted officer, wants to ask the laconic and tough detective Rosa Díaz
on a date. But since he can't do it himself, he turns to Gina Linetti, the sarcastic
civil administrator, Jake Peralta, who is as immature as he is skilled at solving
crimes.
Characters:
Jake Peralta: Detective Jacob "Jake" Peralta is a good enough detective that he
has never had to work so hard or follow the rules too closely. This was the case
until the precinct has a new commander, Captain Raymond Holt, who reminds
him to respect the job. This character is played by Andy Samberg.
Amy Santiago: Detective Amy Santiago is a detective from the 99th precinct of
the NYPD. Always eager to impress, Amy seeks out a mentor to help her achieve
her dream of being promoted to captain. This character is played by Melissa
Fumero.

2. Rosa Diaz: Detective Rosa Diaz is considered the "tough girl" of the precinct.
Rosa is scary, smart, reserved, and difficult to read. Most of the members of the
precinct are scared and disturbed by her. Rosa takes pride in the fact that no one
knows much about her. Jake only knows three facts about her, one of which is
that Rosa has a watering can. This character is played by Stephanie Beatriz.
Charles Boyle: Detective Charles Boyle is a main character on the show. It is the
workhorse of the police station. It is shown that he is not that bright and is not
physically gifted, although he tries harder than anyone.
Terry Jeffords: Lieutenant Terrence Vincent "Terry" Jeffords is a main character
on the show. He is the linebacker of a man who has lost his temper, not because
he is a coward, but because a year before the series, his wife Sharon had twins;
Cagney and Lacey, and she can't imagine not seeing them grow up.

3. Raymond Holt: Captain Raymond Jacob Holt is the captain of the 99th precinct.
He is strict and adheres to police rules. This character is played by Andre
Braugher.
Gina Linetti: Regina "Gina" Linetti is the civil administrator of precinct 99. At the
end of season 2, she leaves the precinct to join Ray Holt, working in the public
relations office of the NYPD. He returns to his old position in "The Oolong Slayer".
This character is played by Chelsea Peretti.
