5. George Harrison
George Harrison, (born February 25, 1943, Liverpool, England—died November 29,
2001, Los Angeles, California, U.S.), British musician, singer, and songwriter, who
gained fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles, one of the most important and
influential bands in the history of rock music. Harrison was the youngest of the
“Fab Four” and was known as “the quiet Beatle.” He later achieved singular success
as a songwriter and performer.
Harrison was born the youngest of four children in a working-class family. His father
was a steward in the merchant navy before becoming a bus conductor, and his
mother was a clerk in a grocery store. Harrison began playing guitar in secondary
school. He later met Paul McCartney, who invited Harrison to join the Quarrymen,
the rock band he and John Lennon had formed. The group underwent several
name and lineup changes before becoming the Beatles and settling on Harrison as
lead guitar, Lennon as vocalist and rhythm guitar, McCartney as vocalist and bass,
and Ringo Starr as drummer.
Kinfauns was a large 1950s deluxe bungalow in Esher in the English county of
Surrey, on the Claremont Estate. From 1964 to 1970, it was the home of George
Harrison, lead guitarist of the Beatles. During 1967, Harrison and Boyd painted the
outside of the house in psychedelic patterns; a mural around the fireplace was
created by design collective the Fool, who also painted several Beatles musical
instruments and Harrison's Radford Mini de Ville GT. At the rear of the house was a
guitar-shaped swimming pool, while gold discs and the multiple awards the band
had achieved adorned the sitting room walls. In front, a tall 15-foot (4.6 m) sliding
door kept unauthorised visitors out of the garden. The door was soon covered in
fans' signatures and autographs.
Harrison, a notable car enthusiast, is known for owning another Mercedes-Benz
600, the stretch-limo Pullman version that he purchased from John Lennon in 1971,
a 500SEL outfitted with AMG accessories, as well as a Porsche 928S and a McLaren
F1.
Harrison died from lung cancer in 2001 at the age of 58, two years after surviving a
knife attack by an intruder at his Friar Park home. His remains were cremated, and
the ashes were scattered according to Hindu tradition in a private ceremony in the
Ganges and Yamuna rivers in India.
Harrison released several best-selling singles and albums as a solo performer. In
1988, he co-founded the platinum-selling supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. A
prolific recording artist, he was featured as a guest guitarist on tracks by Badfinger,
Ronnie Wood and Billy Preston, and collaborated on songs and music with Dylan,
Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr and Tom Petty, among others. Rolling Stone magazine
ranked him number 11 in their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
