The position of the arts in Britain today may
be described as a mixture of public apathy
and private enthusiasm. People tend to be
 individualistic, exploring emotions rather
                 than ideas.

Literature
Reading is only slightly less popular as a
free-time activity than listening to music. The
vast majority of the books that are read in
Britain are not “serious” literature. Britain is
a home of what might be called
            “middlebrow’ literature.

part of “the arts” at all – it is simply
                  entertainment.
Government gives much less financial help
to its film industry than other European
                   countries do.
Britain produces very few films, although
cinemagoing is a regular habit for a large
    number of people than theatergoing.

Painting
Painting is not as widely popular as other
arts in Britain. Small art galleries, where
people might look at paintings with a view to
buying them, are rare. Nevertheless London

houses of Sotheby`s and Christie`s are
                world-famous.
