The Problem With The English Language Essay
What if the English in the US was changed to Spanish all of the sudden? Sure some people took a Spanish class in high school but is that really
good enough to consider yourself fluent? Of course not. You're not familiar enough with the language to be fluent and certainly, you didn't learn it
for long enough. In " the problem with the English language in India" Smith Aula explains major problems caused in India because the regional
language was changed to English. Aula acknowledges learning English in India varies inequality between the countryside and city. I agree with
the author that it's not fair for the local Indians to learn English to survive because I can relate to the people in India. I was also expected to learn
English to communicate with the people around me and I barely knew any English. Growing up I went to a school where almost all subjects were
given in Amharic ( a language in Ethiopia). We had one course in English, The teachers spoke it with a lot of mispronunciation but it was good
enough to qualify to teach. Did I understand what they were saying? Yeah like one out of five words. I liked watching English movies and took
one subject in English but I still didn't know how to speak English well. Three years ago, that 's when I moved to Seattle with few English words in
my pocket and while we landed half of it fell out of my pocket. I only knew basic things to say, like how to say my name. It wasn't long before I went
to school; I remember my

Learning English as a Second Language Essay
English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in
should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses
throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that
English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I
came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an

Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in
pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and
listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and
American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the
lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they
listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native
language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a
nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first
couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say
"according to me" instead of "in my

English As An International Language Essay
Language spoken by different people of different nations is an international language. Society is made by a group of people who share the common
values and culture. The process in which they interact and they relate information to each other to create a value in terms of efficiency and
understanding is communication; through a common language. The total number of languages spoken in this world is estimated to be in between
three to eight thousand. English language ranks only behind Spanish and Chinese Mandarin in terms of the first language used by people. However,
the number of people who understand and can communicate in English is probably among the highest in the world leaving any languages far behind.

What Are The Skills Of Language Skills Essay
Learning English as a foreign language demands learning the four skills of the language which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The four
skills of language are divided into two groups: the productive skills (writing and speaking), and receptive skills (reading and listening). In this paper
much attention will be paid mainly to one category of language skills and those are productive skills. In my experience as a teacher of English in Egypt,
I have met many students who have some challenges with writing and speaking English. This essay will spot the most common challenges that my
students faced and how they overcame these challenges.
Starting with speaking skill, fluency is the main target of teaching speaking. According to Hughes...show more content...
When the students translate Arabic into English they sometimes use words causing misunderstanding and confusion. For example, a sentence like "Flu
infection spreads by peace with hand" is grammatically correct but meaningless. The student means "Flue infection is caused by greetings and
handshakes". The words greetings and peace are of the same meaning in Arabic so the student wrote one instead of the other.
To overcome such a challenge, EFL learners have to read more texts in the target language to enhance their vocabulary and how to put vocabulary into
context. Also it is important for teachers to make the students aware of the differences in the structure of their native language and the target language.
The only way to improve students' speaking and writing skills is to put them into use. Students' writing, like their speaking, can only benefit from
exposure to a wide–range of situations which require specific skills and language. A teacher will want to ensure that she/he is giving students practice
in all areas of writing and

Importance Of English Language Arts Essay
What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of
communicating thoughts. Every subject is important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds complexity
of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an
interviewer notices is one's ability to articulate, and learning English Language Arts helps to obtain that goal. Being able to communicate, express one's
self, and build life skills, are the reasons why English Language Arts is the most important subject in our education. First and foremost, the...show more

However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how to create stories by being imaginative, or write
poetry by thinking creatively. Writing takes critical thinking, a general skill widely used in life. Subjects like math or science may use critical
thinking, but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning language arts have taught me to be more
expressive; you will never know if your words could inspire someone one day.
Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the outside world. The first impression in an interview
is how you present yourself, not how many achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the questions,
are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The
senior portfolio is probably one of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as a student and as
an individual. Learning how to create a good portfolio from Language Arts class shows one's education level. In addition, companies recruit people

English in My Life Essay
When my teacher said "good morning" to me on the very first day of school, I knew that she would be teaching a tough subject. She didn't
get any answer for that greeting because back then, I knew nothing about "good morning". Surprisingly, as I went through the class session
on that day, I realized that "good morning" wasn't the first English phrase that I'd known. English has been rooted in my society long
before my country achieved its independence and shockingly I've used some of its words in my daily speech without realizing it because the words
were fully modified by the society so that they could be installed smoothly into our language. Learning English was always an interesting yet tough

When someone speaks English in my society, he or she feels a sense of withdrawal because they are set apart to a very small group in the society.
People tend to belittle this group for speaking other languages, and normally they will end up speaking their first language to comply with the
larger group in the society. With all these reasons, my interest towards English was completely gone when I enrolled in secondary school, six years
after my formal `encounter' with the English language. For having this negative feeling, I became a member of a large group of students who had
never realized the significance of the English language. One day was unusually dull. I was waiting for the teacher to come to the class and instead of
revising my past English lessons that I rarely cared about, I prayed that she wouldn't show up that day. After ten minutes' wait, she entered the class
saying "good morning". The greeting didn't bother me much, but when she came to me asking for the assignment that she gave the day
before, I was speechless and I just gave her the blank handout that I was supposed to complete for that day. Her face showed no emotion and with that
she ripped the paper into pieces. That day marked a massive change in my attitude toward English lessons and the English language in general. The
incident was very important to me because I then realized that even in a subtle way, language represents people and to respect the language means to

role in improving English language. McDonough S. (1983: 142) stated that "motivation of the student is one of the most important factors influencing
their success or failure in learning the language." When studying English, youth might face a lot of different problems like environment problem,

Standard English Essay
The question to ask is: 'Why not use Standard English all the time?'
Language is a powerful communication tool the user holds to express their individual identity and ingroup solidarity. The use of Standard English helps
to direct this, as it acts as the structure of communication, ingroup and between speech communities to effectively present a standard for mutual
understanding. Outside of Standard English comes the use of slang, netspeak and textspeak, which helps to develop and enrich the language, as well

Other forms of the English language are developed from speech communities with an intention, for efficiency and to show inclusion, and to exclude
others. It also helps to convey a specific identity of the speaker, with the use of syntactic and phonological differences from Standard English. These
modifications form non–standard dialects, transferring the speaker's cultural background and language to provide a better perception and reflection of
identity. The falling intonation accompanied with interrogatives in the Asian ethnolect, such as 'Gravy?', is the opposite of the rising intonation used
for the same purpose by Australians, and can quickly cause conflict between the two communities due to the missing benchmark in language. Pronoun

within the speech community.
There are a range of English varieties which are different from the Standard, developed from communities of speakers all sharing the same use of

Grammar, Language, And English Language Essay
Grammar is the system of a language that is needed for a better communication. People sometimes describe grammar as the set of rules of an English
language, but in fact no language has rules. If we think that it is all about rules, there should be someone who created the rules so that other people
can use, learn or practise it. Whereas but languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved into words,
phrases and sentences. No commonly–spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call "grammar" is simply a reflection of a
language at a particular time. When we question ourselves that do we need to learn grammar to learn or acquire a language, the answer is no. It is
not necessary to learn grammar and acquire a language but we need to learn the grammar in order for a serious learning of a foreign language or

The Influence Of The English Language
Throughout time, English has risen rapidly to become a welcomed global lingua franca. Its ability to adapt to different groups of people and cultures
all over the world is one of the factors contributing to its rapid spread and utilisation. So rapid is its spread, that non–native English speakers currently
outnumber native English speakers by more than two to one. English is spreading at an unimaginable rate across the world. People spanning the globe
are learning English in hopes to acquire a little of the perceived esteem which is augmented by the language. That is, the belief that English is their
passport to a new life. A life where further education, finding employment, business expansion and an understanding of popular culture are all
opportunities which come hand in hand with this seemingly prestigious language. It is these beliefs which show the hegemonic influence English has
over other languages and cultures around the world. Between the 16th to 18th centuries, British colonialism brought English across the world. Whilst
leading the Industrial Revolution, the English speaking Britons were also spearheading something much larger: the globalisation of English language.
Expanding international trade meant that English was being transported all over the world, and absorbing new words from the many different
languages it came across. During this time, the English lexicon swelled immensely, taking on foreign words and giving its vocabulary breadth like no

English Essay: English As A Global Language
The English Language
A language that is spoken internationally is called "Global" or "World" language. A global language is a language in which people speak
internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations and diplomatic relations. It is a "lingua franca", a language that helps people from
different backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in human history have reached to the point in
which they are called a global language, amongst those few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a
native language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as; technical and scientific communication, education
and employment.
The reason why English is a global language is because people tend to learn easier languages. English is a language that doesn't use complex grammar
and can be consumed relatively easy. Moreover, there are no grammatical differences between different genders and it consists of less auxiliary verbs
than any other language. Another factor that has led English to its popularity is the political and...show more content...

to be "cool". These forms of media are rapidly growing, and the English language dominating them is making the language spread rapidly as well,
increasing its global importance. English's significance is also observed through looking at its increasing expansion in parts of the world that do not
typically speak the language. Currently, it is the lingua franca ("A medium of communication between peoples of different languages" is the
definition provided by the Free Dictionary for the term lingua franca) of Europe (Lingua Franca). Two out of every three Europeans has at least a
basic understanding of the language (Doughty). Not only is this, but an EU report claims that English is likely to become even more dominant in the
future. Although the popularity of a subject is not equivalent to its relevance, in this case English's importance increases because it is becoming

The History of the English Language Essay
The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English language originated and how it has spread to become
one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the English
language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my
paper, to see if Germanic tribes started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. The history of the
English language is of significance because English is spoken more frequently than any other language except Chinese, (Bright, 1992). A Germanic

The Proto–Indo–European language was more complex than English today. It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and
neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number,
and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different
grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express
such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The
Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following
millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek,
Balto–Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the
Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). Theorists suggest
that the horse was a major element of the Proto–Indo–European and the Indo–European

English Language Teaching Methods
Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because
considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English
is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed
person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this
aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a
Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students. So teachers
have to choose the methodology as suit their classroom and environment. If teacher takes all the factors into consideration classroom becomes more
meaningful. All the methods are not meaningful when teacher choose them as per the needs of the classroom.

The Problem With The English Language Essay

  • 1. The Problem With The English Language Essay What if the English in the US was changed to Spanish all of the sudden? Sure some people took a Spanish class in high school but is that really good enough to consider yourself fluent? Of course not. You're not familiar enough with the language to be fluent and certainly, you didn't learn it for long enough. In " the problem with the English language in India" Smith Aula explains major problems caused in India because the regional language was changed to English. Aula acknowledges learning English in India varies inequality between the countryside and city. I agree with the author that it's not fair for the local Indians to learn English to survive because I can relate to the people in India. I was also expected to learn English to communicate with the people around me and I barely knew any English. Growing up I went to a school where almost all subjects were given in Amharic ( a language in Ethiopia). We had one course in English, The teachers spoke it with a lot of mispronunciation but it was good enough to qualify to teach. Did I understand what they were saying? Yeah like one out of five words. I liked watching English movies and took one subject in English but I still didn't know how to speak English well. Three years ago, that 's when I moved to Seattle with few English words in my pocket and while we landed half of it fell out of my pocket. I only knew basic things to say, like how to say my name. It wasn't long before I went to school; I remember my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Learning English as a Second Language Essay English is an international language which is used officially all around the world. Anybody who wants to make connections with the world we live in should learn English. I had English language classes in my secondary and high school years. I also took some private English learning courses throughout summers in my country, Turkey. However, I could not improve my English effectively as all Turkish students in Turkey. I fully agree that English will be learned most efficiently in the boundaries of an English–speaking country not in the home country because of some cases. Therefore, I came here, USA, to learn English better after graduation from my university. First, English is dealt with all the time while staying in an English–speaking...show more content... Neither was I able to get their points, nor could they understand me. The reasons were that my Turkish English teachers are not the experts in pronunciation and there is no class focusing on speaking at state schools in Turkey. An experiment was performed by Major et al. about speaking and listening problems for international people. Four groups of one hundred listeners, whose native languages were Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and American English, heard brief lectures presented in English by speakers with different native languages and answered questions based on the lectures. The results indicated that both native and nonnative listeners scored significantly lower on listening comprehension tests when they listened to nonnative speakers of English, and Chinese group scored significantly lower when listening to speakers who shared their native language. Only Spanish group did well when they listened to their native speaker (174). This experiment showed that learning English from a nonnative speaker may cause troubles in both listening and speaking parts of English. Additionally, I lacked of ability on word choice for the first couple of months in the USA. For example, I was using adjective "too" for positive circumstances " instead of "very" or "so", and I used to say "according to me" instead of "in my Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 4. English As An International Language Essay Language spoken by different people of different nations is an international language. Society is made by a group of people who share the common values and culture. The process in which they interact and they relate information to each other to create a value in terms of efficiency and understanding is communication; through a common language. The total number of languages spoken in this world is estimated to be in between three to eight thousand. English language ranks only behind Spanish and Chinese Mandarin in terms of the first language used by people. However, the number of people who understand and can communicate in English is probably among the highest in the world leaving any languages far behind. • 5. What Are The Skills Of Language Skills Essay Learning English as a foreign language demands learning the four skills of the language which are reading, writing, listening and speaking. The four skills of language are divided into two groups: the productive skills (writing and speaking), and receptive skills (reading and listening). In this paper much attention will be paid mainly to one category of language skills and those are productive skills. In my experience as a teacher of English in Egypt, I have met many students who have some challenges with writing and speaking English. This essay will spot the most common challenges that my students faced and how they overcame these challenges. Starting with speaking skill, fluency is the main target of teaching speaking. According to Hughes...show more content... When the students translate Arabic into English they sometimes use words causing misunderstanding and confusion. For example, a sentence like "Flu infection spreads by peace with hand" is grammatically correct but meaningless. The student means "Flue infection is caused by greetings and handshakes". The words greetings and peace are of the same meaning in Arabic so the student wrote one instead of the other. To overcome such a challenge, EFL learners have to read more texts in the target language to enhance their vocabulary and how to put vocabulary into context. Also it is important for teachers to make the students aware of the differences in the structure of their native language and the target language. The only way to improve students' speaking and writing skills is to put them into use. Students' writing, like their speaking, can only benefit from exposure to a wide–range of situations which require specific skills and language. A teacher will want to ensure that she/he is giving students practice in all areas of writing and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 7. Importance Of English Language Arts Essay What is English Language Arts? How does it differ from English, the language itself? English Language Arts is not a language, but it is the study of communicating thoughts. Every subject is important in school; each demonstrates a particular skill in education, but Language Arts builds complexity of a person's learning. Speaking, reading, and writing are all components of language arts. Having these skills are important; the first thing an interviewer notices is one's ability to articulate, and learning English Language Arts helps to obtain that goal. Being able to communicate, express one's self, and build life skills, are the reasons why English Language Arts is the most important subject in our education. First and foremost, the...show more content... However, as I learned more in language arts, I discovered others methods in writing. I know how to create stories by being imaginative, or write poetry by thinking creatively. Writing takes critical thinking, a general skill widely used in life. Subjects like math or science may use critical thinking, but it focuses more on applying knowledge in discussions rather than your own thoughts. Learning language arts have taught me to be more expressive; you will never know if your words could inspire someone one day. Lastly, English Language Arts build life skills that are crucial in life, to prepare yourself for the outside world. The first impression in an interview is how you present yourself, not how many achievements you have made. The way you speak, the way you act, the way you answer the questions, are parts of doing presentations. Senior portfolio is an example of a presentation in high school, and it is taught in English Language Arts class. The senior portfolio is probably one of the most important projects in one's whole high school career because it reflects your growth as a student and as an individual. Learning how to create a good portfolio from Language Arts class shows one's education level. In addition, companies recruit people with a good education, what you have learned in English Language Arts will prepare you in college, and your future career. • 8. English in My Life Essay When my teacher said "good morning" to me on the very first day of school, I knew that she would be teaching a tough subject. She didn't get any answer for that greeting because back then, I knew nothing about "good morning". Surprisingly, as I went through the class session on that day, I realized that "good morning" wasn't the first English phrase that I'd known. English has been rooted in my society long before my country achieved its independence and shockingly I've used some of its words in my daily speech without realizing it because the words were fully modified by the society so that they could be installed smoothly into our language. Learning English was always an interesting yet tough experience...show more content... When someone speaks English in my society, he or she feels a sense of withdrawal because they are set apart to a very small group in the society. People tend to belittle this group for speaking other languages, and normally they will end up speaking their first language to comply with the larger group in the society. With all these reasons, my interest towards English was completely gone when I enrolled in secondary school, six years after my formal `encounter' with the English language. For having this negative feeling, I became a member of a large group of students who had never realized the significance of the English language. One day was unusually dull. I was waiting for the teacher to come to the class and instead of revising my past English lessons that I rarely cared about, I prayed that she wouldn't show up that day. After ten minutes' wait, she entered the class saying "good morning". The greeting didn't bother me much, but when she came to me asking for the assignment that she gave the day before, I was speechless and I just gave her the blank handout that I was supposed to complete for that day. Her face showed no emotion and with that she ripped the paper into pieces. That day marked a massive change in my attitude toward English lessons and the English language in general. The incident was very important to me because I then realized that even in a subtle way, language represents people and to respect the language means to respect Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Its ability to adapt to different groups of people and cultures all over the world is one of the factors contributing to its rapid spread and utilisation. So rapid is its spread, that non–native English speakers currently outnumber native English speakers by more than two to one. English is spreading at an unimaginable rate across the world. Whilst leading the Industrial Revolution, the English speaking Britons were also spearheading something much larger: the globalisation of English language. Expanding international trade meant that English was being transported all over the world, and absorbing new words from the many different languages it came across. • 17. The History of the English Language Essay The History of the English Language In this paper I will discuss where and how the English language originated and how it has spread to become one of the most spoken languages in the world. Before I started my research on my topic of choice, my original hypothesis was that the English language was started by a whole assortment of Germanic tribes invading England thousands of years ago. This ultimately became the goal of my paper, to see if Germanic tribes started the English language, or if it was started from some other tribes that I was not aware of. The history of the English language is of significance because English is spoken more frequently than any other language except Chinese, (Bright, 1992). It is possible to reconstruct three genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter) and up to eight cases (nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, ablative, locative, instrumental). Adjectives agreed in case, number, and gender with the noun. The verb system was also rich in inflections, used for aspect, mood, tense, voice, person, and number. Different grammatical forms of a word were often related by the feature of ablaut, or vowel graduation: the root vowel would change systematically to express such differences as singular and plural or past and present tense, as is still the case in English foot/feet or take/took (Crystal, 1997). The Proto–Indo–European language is thought to have been spoken before 3,000 BC, and to have split up into different languages during the following millennium (Crystal, 1997). The languages families include Celtic, Germanic, Italic, Indo–Iranian, Tocharian, Armenian, Anatolian, Albanian, Greek, Balto–Slavic, and Slavic languages. Yiddish, German, Afrikaans, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, and English make up the West Germanic subgroup of the Germanic Branch (Crystal, 1997). Scholars renamed the language group the Indo–European family after 3,000 BC (Crystal, 1997). • 19. Essay On English Language Teaching English Language Teaching Methods Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil's age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this aspect. For ex: a speaker from Hyderabad emphasizes more vowels before many words because of the influence of Urdu. Straight – Istraight. And a Bihari pronounces 'sh' as 's' because of the influence of Kharboli. Teachers don't take into consideration of this aspect and mistreat students.
