Case Study 1 Self – perception Project 4 Case Study 2 1.Describe your perception of the situation: This situation has the potential to be awkward, but
it is certainly salvageable. I think that mentioning Toya's high level of responsibility and her ability to be a "self–starter" was a very good opening to
this conversation about her first few weeks on the job. Making an interrogative statement about, "how Toya could improve her work" was a bit of a
mistake in my opinion. It put Toya, who is already a bit insecure, on the defensive. Of course, Toya could have answer the question with something like,

Influence Of Fashion On Self Perception
Introduction Today, fashion choices plays a major role in influencing the self–perception of different people. In order to understand how this happens, it
is a good idea first to ascertain what self–perception is. This is the view of an individual about themselves as well as the physical and mental attributes
that make up the individual. The theory of self–perception holds that individuals tend to develop certain attitudes through making observations of their
own behavior as well as making conclusions of the attitudes that have led to them. One of the elements that influences self–perception is fashion
choices. This is what this research paper will be based on. The paper will examine in details how fashion choices influences the self–perception of
different people.
How fashion choices influence self–perception in different people Today, there are numerous researches that have been carried out in relation the
influence of fashion on self–perception on different people. All these researchers are of the opinion that the way that an individual dresses has a major
impact on his self–perception. First a notable influence of fashion on self–perception is that it leads to a person developing confidence. The manner in
which an individual has dressed will determine whether he will be confident or not. What an individual wears at a certain point leads him or her to
develop power not only on himself but also on others. Evidence of this can be shown in a research carried out in the

with another. This basically defines biasness and it is usually considered to be an unfair thought. Individuals not only act in a bias way towards people
around them but also towards themselves without realizing it. This leads to the issue of biases in self–perception. Self–perception is defined as how an

As for under–estimators, they tend to also misanalyse their power and weaknesses, make unproductive job–relevant decisions, set low goal levels, and
have low self–worthiness. In addition, they would usually not pursue controlling positions or recognize their full potential (Yammarino and Atwater,
1997). In many situations, individuals experience greater risk tolerance because they underestimate the risks. Therefore, individuals such as managers
or key–decision makers will fall for these biases that lead them to make poor business decisions or become indecisive especially when faced with
problems involving numerous subjective opinions (Brooks, 2011 cited in Michael Workman, 2012). In addition, people tend to attribute more
credibility to data than is necessary and hence overestimate the probability of success simply due to the presence of richness in data. (Lichtenstein et
al. 1982 cited in Craig R et al., 2007). In other words, the greater the amount of data, the more confident a person is in the accuracy. For instance,
individuals are more positive in terms of survival rates rather than mortality rates when making a medical prognosis even if the probabilities of the
results are most probably the same (Reisberg, 1997 cited in Workman, 2012). This can lead to the perception of having lesser satisfactory choices
presented and thus one may take a more hostile and intransigent position

"Self perception theory"
Executive summary:–
Self–perception theory (SPT) is an account of attitude change developed by psychologist Daryl Bem. It asserts that people develop their attitudes by
observing their behavior and concluding what attitudes must have caused them. The theory is counterintuitive in nature, as the conventional wisdom is
that attitudes come prior to behaviors. Furthermore, the theory suggests that a person induces attitudes without accessing internal cognition and mood
states. The person reasons their own...show more content...
If those behaviors are maladjusted ones, people will attribute those maladjustments to their poor adapting abilities and thus suffer from the
corresponding psychological problems. Thus, this concept can be used to treat clients with psychological problems that resulted from maladjustments
by guiding them to first change their behavior and later dealing with the 'problems'.
One of the most famous therapies making use of this concept is therapy for 'Hetero social Anxiety'. In this case, the assumption is that an individual
perceives that he or she has poor social skills because he/she has no dates. Experiments showed that males with hetero social anxiety perceived less
anxiety with females after several sessions of therapy in which they engaged in a 12–minute, purposefully biased dyadic social interactions with a
separate females. From these apparently successful interactions, the males inferred that their hetero social anxiety was reduced. This effect is shown to
be quite long–lasting as the reduction in perceived hetero social anxiety resulted in a significantly greater number of dates among subjects 6 months
later.
Disproof of Self–Perception Theory?
There was a time when it was debated whether or not dissonance or self perception was the valid mechanism behind attitude change. The chief
difficulty was in finding an experiment where the two flexible theories would make distinctly different predictions. Some prominent social psychologists

Discussion Post
Week Four
NURS 6541, N–11 This week?s topic is developmental and growth issues that may have an impact on mental wellness, self–perception, and behavior
of children from infancy into adulthood. For the purpose of discussion I will evaluate issues of self–perception, behavior, and mental wellness in
school–aged children. I will also evaluate strategies to mitigate the promotion of positive behavior, mental wellness, and good self–perception. Also, I
will provide additional educational and support resources for parents.
Self–perception
Self–perception evolves at each stage of growth and development. As children enter school, they become more self–aware. Therefore, peers, activities,
and friendships play a fundamental role in the elaboration of an individual?s self–perception. These various factors help to mold the personality and
character of a child. Children between the ages of five to eleven place a lot of value on their physical skills and achievements, social acceptance,
appearance, and level of control. Many young people have a tendency to compare themselves with other people their age. This time of self–discovery is
often clouded by the need to fit in and often to a rigid set of linear social rules of what other children their age think of them. Therefore, the parents
must make their children feel competent, loved, and have self–respect (Burns, Dunn, Brady, Starr, & Blosser, 2013).
Mental Wellness Issue Anxiety is an extremely common

Have you ever thought about why we feel about ourselves the way we do? Do you hate yourself or are you confident about who you are? Either way
you feel about yourself, this all comes from your self–concept. According to Steven McCornack's Reflect and Relate "self–concept is your overall
perception of who you are." My self–concept is constantly changing due to confidence boosts or if I become depressed and sad; these factors also
influence my self–esteem. My self–concept helps determine how well I am able to communicate with others. "Some psychologists and sociologist have
advanced theories that suggest we learn who we are through four basic meaning: our communication with other individuals, our association with
groups, roles we assume, and our self–labels" (Beebe 35).
The ways in which my self–concept affects how I communicate interested me because, I never thought that there were so many concepts which
directly contribute to the way I am able to communicate with others. Some of these concepts include society, stereotypes, culture, gender roles, sexism
and many others. For example, if I have a poor self–concept this can make it hard to interact with others. However, if my self–concept is good then I
am confident about talking and opening up to other people. For the most part, my self–concept and self–esteem are poor, I do not necessarily hate
myself, I am just not very confident. I feel like the people that know me would be shocked to know that my

Perception of Others Essay
Perception of Others
There is no second chance for a first impression. Perception has never been random, since the beginning of time it has been human nature to judge
others before really getting a chance to know them. People immediately cast others into stereotypes in every situation: they form a schema, or an
organized set of thoughts about something containing properties and uses. These schemas effect the way people carry themselves around others.
Schemas are usually formed with in eight seconds of getting the initial impression of a person. This by psychologists is know as the ?eight–second
rule,? where people have been proven to form hypothesizes about others with in eight seconds of meeting or seeing an individual for the...show more

seems to be very ?uncool? to say the least. His oversized plaid jacket, tight laced large sneakers, and tight jeans combining with his out of control
curly hair and spectacles allow myself to automatically place ?the guy behind me? in a stereotype of nerds. The way he crosses his legs also leads
me to believe he is one of those that probably enjoy computers and Dungeons & Dragons, yet for all I know this guy could be the best basketball
player at Catawba. By his appearance I have already made assumptions about his lifestyle, or formed something referred to as Functional Association.
After realizing the extent of judgement I cast on others, I began to contemplate if others would place me in certain stereotypes if I didn?t appear as I
do; so, I decided to form my own experiment.
I decided to make myself salient, or stand out, to better see my impressions on people. I began a three–day experiment where I would wear my not–so
attractive glasses, a hooded sweatshirt, and Velcro shoes from Wal
–Mart to dress like one would call a ?bum.? Of my many experiences of the
weekend, three stood out from all the rest: my attendance at the soccer game, my trip to the Bar Charlotte nightclub, and being introduced to new
friends.
No girl in their right mind would dance with a guy with big ugly glasses. For we all know they have already formed something called an illusory
correlation, or a memory of a negative or distasteful person or instance. Here I began to look at not

I chose the topic of self–concept through interpersonal communication because I had an interest in it. This interest is because I didn't understand that
one's self–concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self–concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of
how communication affects one's self–concept and how it affects one's perception
One's self–concept affects one's perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication.

gender, motivational level and psychological type. It is widely...show more content...
One will either come out of a situation with a positive or negative concept of these surroundings. Poor communication can cause one to have a poor
perception of oneself. One's emotional state, dislikes, likes values and body image are affected by the opinions of others and can render one to have
an inferior and insecure self–concept.
How one communicates is also influenced by gender. Studies show that ones sex can place a person in a gender role expectation. Women and Men
communicate differently and because sexual identity is defined through same sex parent or role model, women and men can get into gender role
expectations. These expectations influence their perception attitudes and behavior that will result in a communication style. This early self–concept
can effect each one's interpersonal relations. Women for instance are much–attached human beings they have very early identification with their
mothers, and this can cause an on going pattern of role expectation. It can lead to interpersonal communication skills that are very nurturing and
understanding. Women are not threatened by intimacy and communicating at a close range with people. Similarly, men also have an early
identification process not with their mother, but their fathers. Men tend to be fairly reserved, and quite. Men are most comfortable when there is a
level of separation. This male role will contribute to the communication processes and it can cause communication to

people communicate best with people of similar cultures.
The articles that I read discussed Social Perception. Social Perception was described as interpreting information about other people. If you feel that you

(3) First Impression error allows a lasting impression to be formed based on an initial meeting. This can be positive or negative. If you are going to a
job interview and the interviewer sees your appearance is neat and you are prepared of the interview, this could determine whether or not you are
chosen for the job. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also
be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job.
(4) Projection allows believe that other people have similar beliefs. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection
is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true.
(5) Self– Fulfilling prophecy affects the outcome of expectations while interacting with others. An, example of this is President Bush convinced
Congress that invading Iraq would liberate the country and make the world a safer place, without knowing that it would make the Iraqi rebels feel that
we were occupying their country and trying to take control the oil.
Comparing ourselves to others to see how we measure up and using past experiences can effect perceptions that we have with others. There are many
processes that influence perception. Consciously deciding what information to pay attention to can influence many decisions we make. Understanding

My life is influenced by many different attributes not just from cultural aspects. I have had it very rough in life growing up since childhood being
raised in a low income town as the oldest girl of four of three other female children; I was forced to grow up fast in life. My mother gave birth to me
and all of my sisters in Ansonia, CT which is a small town where just about everyone knows each other and knows your all of your business. My social

It was tough being eight years old and just wanting to fit in but you stuck out like a sore thumb. It was also hard because I was also exceptionally
bright and received a lot of awards so a lot of the children didn't like me because they said that they thought I was a nerd as well or that I thought I
was better than them because I knew more than them. But this was not the case I just simply wanted what every child wanted to be liked, loved,
and accepted. My teachers took a special interest in me and always gave me extra work and push me beyond the limits because they knew I had
special abilities and what I was capable of, this is one the reasons that inspired me to become a teacher. When I was twelve I moved to West Haven,
Ct a middle class town with my Grandparents because my mother was not competent enough to raise us. This town was a little better but I was
still getting made fun of but this time it was the black kids making fun of me because they said I talked like a white girl. I was so confused about
this because I couldn't understand how you can talk like a color. That was how I was raised to not see color and still don't till this day. It feels good
to reflect on my identity, it makes me realize that I am the person who I am today because of it. I make sure today not judge children and or their
families based on any attributes whatsoever, especially racial or cultural. I want to make all families feel as comfortable as possible

An Individual 's Self Perception
An individual 's self–perception can positively or negatively affect a work environment. As human tends to feel bias when perceiving themselves,
various individuals often suffer from self–enhancement bias or self–effacement bias. Individuals suffering from extremely cases of self–enhancement
bias or self–effacement bias will lead to a negative work environment as they will feel dissatisfied or discontent with their job and obligations in a
company. Individuals suffering from extreme self–enhancement bias tends to that they are not being recognized and rewarded for their superior
works, which can leads to the false consensus error. The false consensus error occurs when an employee or worker assumes that they can commit
unethical behaviors like telling a lie or taking credit for another 's work because they genuinely believe that their dishonest actions frequently transpire
in society and in the work place. Meanwhile, individuals suffering from extreme cases of self–effacement bias generally possess low–self–confidence
and cannot relinquish their feelings of self–blame for any major or minor blunder or failures they have committed. As a result of their low self–esteem,
individuals with self–effacement bias feels uncomfortable and out of place in their workplace, leading to deficient work performance and subpar
work efforts after a period of time. However, self–enhancement bias and self–effacement bias does not always lead to a negative work environment as
it can also help an

The Perception Of Self Awareness
In America, our self–image undoubtedly plays a significant role in our daily lives. In an ever–changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of
which we believe the world sees us. But is this true of all people? "Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people can easily be
detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta & Henrich, 2008)." Perception, especially self–perception, can vary
vastly from one culture to another. One perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that "East Asian's attempt to place their concern with

Our positive feelings of ourselves may decrease because we realize we have fallen short of the standards that we try to live by and we immediately
take action to work within those standards. However, action when in a state of self–awareness may vary across cultures. Since self–awareness can
deviate among cultures, it may alter our perception of the way we believe the world sees us. There have been experiments on self–awareness that have
measured cross cultural differences but one in particular studied cultures from both individualistic and collectivist cultures. The study focused on two
cultures from different continents, and in virtually entirely different worlds. In the experiment, the objective self–awareness of both Japanese and
Americans were tested. East Asians not only find it more important to focus on their audience, but they value the view of the audience about
themselves more than they value their own view of themselves (Heine et al, 2008). This aspect of the Japanese leads to a more profound skill set
when dealing with others around them. "The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience will notice the sound of
their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of attention in the third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an
audience member, rather than their own. People of an East Asian

Essay about Concept Analysis on Self Perception
This is a concept analysis on self–perception. Self–perception is non–discriminatory in that it crosses all socio–economic, religious and ethnic
backgrounds. The effects of self–perception can be and usually are life altering. Self–perception can tear at the fabric of the victim's self–confidence,
self–worth and trust in their perceptions when relating to life events, eventually causing a chasm or warped view of the inner self. The reason for
examining self–perception relates to how it affects the healing process and the relationships with those providing care.

Perception can be influenced by outside factors and is constantly changing as a person matures into their life and socio–economic status.
Method
The Walker & Avant (2005) concept analysis method guided the analysis. The analysis includes research from the following literature: nursing,
medicine, philosophy and psychology.
Essential and Critical Attributes Self–concept and self–esteem are critical attributes when understanding self–perception. This is influenced by other
critical attributes that include being able to bond; having relationships, societal standards also contribute to a person's self–perception. Understanding
the psychological effects of self, determine how well we respond to stressors in life such as healthcare problems or relationship development.
Psychological and philosophical ideas of self; help in defining self–perception within the nursing profession. Nursing has become more adaptive to the
perception of self in that there are theories developed that include holistic care and account for a patient's self–perception.
When assessing the concept of self–perception the interrelationship with self–esteem is very evident. Self–perception has seemed to evolve from
self–concept or knowing of self. Self–perception or self–concept can be"... traced to Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle." Rayner p.26)
Most research address self–esteem which is the major influence for self–perception. Therefore, due to the interconnection

Examples Of Self Perception In Julius Caesar
While many wish for a true understanding of themselves in order to find meaning in their lives, social interaction often results in the masking of one's
true characteristics in an attempt to please society. People stray further away from their true selves until the disparity becomes too vast for an solid self
perception. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, multiple characters utilize Caesar's lack of self– understanding to plot his downfall. Shakespeare suggests
that since people's public faces often differ from their own true selves, accurate self perception is almost impossible. Several parts of the play argue
that the escalation of one's power often leads to this drastic difference of one's outer and inner selves. The ever–growing hunger...show more content...
However, Shakespeare suggests that some people may even morph into their distorted public faces. Specifically, vice begins overtake a person to the
point of regularity, until truly virtuous qualities are almost completely lost from him. Cassius, in his attempt to lure Brutus into the conspiracy
references "a Brutus once that would have brooked/ Th' eternal devil to keep his state in Rome/ As easily as a king" (1.2.168–170). Cassius' use
of"eternal devil" generates a symbolic portrayal of Caesar, with 'devil' representing Caesar's corruption. However, 'eternal' carries a dual meaning,
denoting both Caesar's supernatural nature and the timeless extent and significance of his malfeasance. He call attention to the fact that Caesar has
transformed into a 'devilish' nature. Later, in his speech to the Plebeians, Antony remarks, "O judgment, thou [art] fled to brutish beasts" (3.2.114). In
addition, Antony constantly repeats the phrase "But Brutus is an honorable man" (3.2.82–117), to the point of overuse, intentionally forming a
sarcastic tone to question Brutus' nobility. Interestingly enough, his pun on 'brutish beasts' suggests a marked difference in Brutus' personality, in
which honor is transformed into savagery character. Although a brutish nature, is not originally Brutus' public face, Antony's rhetoric, especially in the
context of the conspiracy

Defining the Concept of Self Essay
Who am I? There are many of us walking around trying to figure out who we are and what we stand for. Self–reflection can be conveyed in many
different ways, using many different adjectives to describe the person we are. There are some who will give an honest description of one's self and
then there is some who become delusional with the perception they want others to see. Most people on social sites create a profile which can be so
far from whom they really are, it is usually a perception of who they want to be. This paper will define the self, the concept of the self, the functions
of the self, the core motives of the self, and how the core motives of the self relates to survival.

How Does Self Perception Affect Perception
1. How could factors such as your personal biases, level of self–awareness, cultural background, or the influence of others affect your perceptions?
My personal biases affect my perception by skewing my opinions about certain things that others may view differently. For example, if I have been
bitten by a dog I would have a more negative opinion about dogs than someone who has not been bitten. Your level of self–awareness can affect your
perception by controlling your bias. If you know that you are generally biased towards a topic you can control the bias in order to be open to different
perspectives and interpretations. Cultural background can affect your perceptions, because the views, morals and customs would be integrated with
your personal views, morals and customs. The influence of others affect your perception, because naturally people want to fit in with others.
2. Do you perceive a situation the same way others do? If not, how can you adapt to their perceptions?
I do not feel as though anyone has exactly the same perception as anyone else, since we all have unique backgrounds, experiences and lives. I would
not want to adapt to another individual's perceptions, because my personal perception makes me unique. I do think that it is beneficial to understand
other's perceptions in order to improve your perception. By listening and contemplating another's perception you could learn from them, and your
perception may change as a result.
3. How does the way you select, organize, and interpret information affect the way you communicate?
The way you select information affects the way you communicate by either limiting or expanding the depth of the conversation. If you were selective
with your attention, then the conversation will be very shallow and not beneficial, but if you pay close attention to the conversation, then the
conversation will be deep and beneficial. If you select your information to fit your bias then you and another individual may disagree and change the
nature of the conversation from lighthearted to a debate. The way you organize your information affects the way you communicate by changing the
purpose. Based on the way you present your information, you could be trying to persuade

Self Perception
When we look at the sky the first thing we wish to see are the stars, those
amazing shinning objects everyone talks about, but not all see. Self–concept and
perception work the same way. Through interpersonal communication we relate,
communicate and evolve with other people physically and emotionally and it's affected
by one's self–concept, perception and emotion.
Self–concept is a term used to refer to how someone thinks about or perceives
themselves. How we think about and evaluate ourselves and how aware we are of
ourselves as a concept to be. A more stable definition is, as Baumeister provides, "the
individual's belief about himself or herself, including the person's attributes and who and
what the self is".

The simpler the message, the easier the
other person will get it. You can have a simple discussion by asking straight questions
to someone and having direct and concrete responses. When you have a hard time
discussing an issue that you not know exactly how to express, your recipient might
loose himself in the conversation. Like in any type of communication, there's a chance
that the intended meaning is lost. Specially, when people try to express their feelings
the meanings get wrongly perceived. A person might want to break up a relationship but
in a nice and mature way, so they try to smooth the situation and be sensitive about not
saying something dry that can hurt its partner. But, if it is too sensitive and too nice, the
meaning could get wrongly perceived and the recipient might think its just an issue they
will get over easily, when the point totally was not that.
Perception is someone's reality, it determines how they perceive information from
another person and how the perception of others is the product of how you view
yourself. Perception can be learned, physical or cultural depending on your
environment.
They type of learned perception is formed with someone's personality, from the
thoughts, ideas and beliefs that are taught. For example, when a child communicates
and transmits information with his parents, the parent's personality traits, beliefs and
ethics of life will reflect in the kid. He

Definition Of Self Perception On Appearance
"Appearance is something absolute, but reality is not that way– everything is interdependent, not absolute" – Dalai Lama. There is more to a person
than what they appear to be. Often times people are accepted or rejected in terms of a person's self perception on what is acceptable or not, based
on what they look like. First impressions are formed rapidly and people believe those impressions are highly accurate (Pine, 2011). Before even
speaking to someone, most people envision exactly what type of person they are looking at. It occurs instinctively, oftentimes without the person
doing in intentionally, but in many cases it can impact decisions on a variety of important domains. It is nothing out the ordinary today to be
concerned about one's looks. Many go out of their way to enhance their appearance and are more obsessed with their looks than they would like to
admit. Self perception on appearance is practical and understandable, as attractive people are believed to have distinct advantages in our society.
What triggers the need to appear acceptable to others does not however, measure a person's actual qualities. A physical trait on someone does not
describe in any way what the person may be like. It is understandable that after living with the wide variety of beliefs we conform to through personal
experiences and the influence of mass media, we start to believe what we see. Due to our exposure to the repeated images of mass media, many
people naturally wish to be

Daryl Bem Self Perception Theory
In 1967, Daryl Bem, a social psychologist, created a theory that was drawn from the impression formation and attribution theories and developed the
theory of self–perception. Self–perception is defined as follows, "Self–perception theory relies on situational and dispositional attributions similar to
attribution theory" (Frymier207). Bem created this theory to help understand one's understanding their own behavior through the same attributions that
a person uses to understand someone else's behavior.
Within self–perception theory, the person observes themselves in the same manner in which they observe others and use that process to acknowledge
our own behaviors or ideas of ourselves. Bem suggest that there are two postulates that are associated with self–perception theory. The first is that
individuals get to know themselves through the observation of their own behaviors or situations in which certain behaviors occur. Second is that
external cues have little affect and the individual is in the same position as an outside observer. An example of this would be the foot–in–the–door effect.
Self–perception theory from a psychological stand point is that a person's feelings and attitudes come from their external behaviors. Similarly, with
self–perception theory, persuasion involves person acting and then figuring out their behavior or attitudes (Frymier207).

Self Perception

  • 1. Self Perception Case Study 1 Self – perception Project 4 Case Study 2 1.Describe your perception of the situation: This situation has the potential to be awkward, but it is certainly salvageable. I think that mentioning Toya's high level of responsibility and her ability to be a "self–starter" was a very good opening to this conversation about her first few weeks on the job. Making an interrogative statement about, "how Toya could improve her work" was a bit of a mistake in my opinion. It put Toya, who is already a bit insecure, on the defensive. Of course, Toya could have answer the question with something like, I would welcome any suggestion on my improving my work, but most people are not quite that confident, especially during their...show more content... • 2. Influence Of Fashion On Self Perception Introduction Today, fashion choices plays a major role in influencing the self–perception of different people. In order to understand how this happens, it is a good idea first to ascertain what self–perception is. This is the view of an individual about themselves as well as the physical and mental attributes that make up the individual. The theory of self–perception holds that individuals tend to develop certain attitudes through making observations of their own behavior as well as making conclusions of the attitudes that have led to them. One of the elements that influences self–perception is fashion choices. This is what this research paper will be based on. The paper will examine in details how fashion choices influences the self–perception of different people. How fashion choices influence self–perception in different people Today, there are numerous researches that have been carried out in relation the influence of fashion on self–perception on different people. All these researchers are of the opinion that the way that an individual dresses has a major impact on his self–perception. First a notable influence of fashion on self–perception is that it leads to a person developing confidence. The manner in which an individual has dressed will determine whether he will be confident or not. What an individual wears at a certain point leads him or her to develop power not only on himself but also on others. Evidence of this can be shown in a research carried out in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This basically defines biasness and it is usually considered to be an unfair thought. Individuals not only act in a bias way towards people around them but also towards themselves without realizing it. This leads to the issue of biases in self–perception. Self–perception is defined as how an ...show more content... As for under–estimators, they tend to also misanalyse their power and weaknesses, make unproductive job–relevant decisions, set low goal levels, and have low self–worthiness. In addition, they would usually not pursue controlling positions or recognize their full potential (Yammarino and Atwater, 1997). In many situations, individuals experience greater risk tolerance because they underestimate the risks. Therefore, individuals such as managers or key–decision makers will fall for these biases that lead them to make poor business decisions or become indecisive especially when faced with problems involving numerous subjective opinions (Brooks, 2011 cited in Michael Workman, 2012). In addition, people tend to attribute more credibility to data than is necessary and hence overestimate the probability of success simply due to the presence of richness in data. (Lichtenstein et al. 1982 cited in Craig R et al., 2007). In other words, the greater the amount of data, the more confident a person is in the accuracy. For instance, individuals are more positive in terms of survival rates rather than mortality rates when making a medical prognosis even if the probabilities of the results are most probably the same (Reisberg, 1997 cited in Workman, 2012). This can lead to the perception of having lesser satisfactory choices presented and thus one may take a more hostile and intransigent position Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It asserts that people develop their attitudes by observing their behavior and concluding what attitudes must have caused them. The theory is counterintuitive in nature, as the conventional wisdom is that attitudes come prior to behaviors. Furthermore, the theory suggests that a person induces attitudes without accessing internal cognition and mood states. The person reasons their own...show more content... If those behaviors are maladjusted ones, people will attribute those maladjustments to their poor adapting abilities and thus suffer from the corresponding psychological problems. Thus, this concept can be used to treat clients with psychological problems that resulted from maladjustments by guiding them to first change their behavior and later dealing with the 'problems'. One of the most famous therapies making use of this concept is therapy for 'Hetero social Anxiety'. In this case, the assumption is that an individual perceives that he or she has poor social skills because he/she has no dates. Experiments showed that males with hetero social anxiety perceived less anxiety with females after several sessions of therapy in which they engaged in a 12–minute, purposefully biased dyadic social interactions with a separate females. From these apparently successful interactions, the males inferred that their hetero social anxiety was reduced. This effect is shown to be quite long–lasting as the reduction in perceived hetero social anxiety resulted in a significantly greater number of dates among subjects 6 months later. Disproof of Self–Perception Theory? There was a time when it was debated whether or not dissonance or self perception was the valid mechanism behind attitude change. The chief difficulty was in finding an experiment where the two flexible theories would make distinctly different predictions. Some prominent social psychologists

  • 6. Discussion Post Week Four NURS 6541, N–11 This week?s topic is developmental and growth issues that may have an impact on mental wellness, self–perception, and behavior of children from infancy into adulthood. For the purpose of discussion I will evaluate issues of self–perception, behavior, and mental wellness in school–aged children. I will also evaluate strategies to mitigate the promotion of positive behavior, mental wellness, and good self–perception. Also, I will provide additional educational and support resources for parents. Self–perception Self–perception evolves at each stage of growth and development. As children enter school, they become more self–aware. Therefore, peers, activities, and friendships play a fundamental role in the elaboration of an individual?s self–perception. These various factors help to mold the personality and character of a child. Children between the ages of five to eleven place a lot of value on their physical skills and achievements, social acceptance, appearance, and level of control. Many young people have a tendency to compare themselves with other people their age. This time of self–discovery is often clouded by the need to fit in and often to a rigid set of linear social rules of what other children their age think of them. Therefore, the parents must make their children feel competent, loved, and have self–respect (Burns, Dunn, Brady, Starr, & Blosser, 2013). Mental Wellness Issue Anxiety is an extremely common Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Have you ever thought about why we feel about ourselves the way we do? Do you hate yourself or are you confident about who you are? Either way you feel about yourself, this all comes from your self–concept. According to Steven McCornack's Reflect and Relate "self–concept is your overall perception of who you are." My self–concept is constantly changing due to confidence boosts or if I become depressed and sad; these factors also influence my self–esteem. My self–concept helps determine how well I am able to communicate with others. "Some psychologists and sociologist have advanced theories that suggest we learn who we are through four basic meaning: our communication with other individuals, our association with groups, roles we assume, and our self–labels" (Beebe 35). The ways in which my self–concept affects how I communicate interested me because, I never thought that there were so many concepts which directly contribute to the way I am able to communicate with others. Some of these concepts include society, stereotypes, culture, gender roles, sexism and many others. For example, if I have a poor self–concept this can make it hard to interact with others. However, if my self–concept is good then I am confident about talking and opening up to other people. For the most part, my self–concept and self–esteem are poor, I do not necessarily hate myself, I am just not very confident. I feel like the people that know me would be shocked to know that my Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Perception has never been random, since the beginning of time it has been human nature to judge others before really getting a chance to know them. People immediately cast others into stereotypes in every situation: they form a schema, or an organized set of thoughts about something containing properties and uses. These schemas effect the way people carry themselves around others. Schemas are usually formed with in eight seconds of getting the initial impression of a person. This by psychologists is know as the ?eight–second rule,? where people have been proven to form hypothesizes about others with in eight seconds of meeting or seeing an individual for the...show more content... seems to be very ?uncool? to say the least. The way he crosses his legs also leads me to believe he is one of those that probably enjoy computers and Dungeons & Dragons, yet for all I know this guy could be the best basketball player at Catawba. By his appearance I have already made assumptions about his lifestyle, or formed something referred to as Functional Association. After realizing the extent of judgement I cast on others, I began to contemplate if others would place me in certain stereotypes if I didn?t appear as I do; so, I decided to form my own experiment. I decided to make myself salient, or stand out, to better see my impressions on people. I began a three–day experiment where I would wear my not–so attractive glasses, a hooded sweatshirt, and Velcro shoes from Wal –Mart to dress like one would call a ?bum.? Of my many experiences of the weekend, three stood out from all the rest: my attendance at the soccer game, my trip to the Bar Charlotte nightclub, and being introduced to new friends. No girl in their right mind would dance with a guy with big ugly glasses. This interest is because I didn't understand that one's self–concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self–concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of how communication affects one's self–concept and how it affects one's perception One's self–concept affects one's perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication. Aspects of one's life influence their self–concept, which not only affect how people perceive them but how they perceive themselves. Such things are gender, motivational level and psychological type. It is widely...show more content... One will either come out of a situation with a positive or negative concept of these surroundings. Poor communication can cause one to have a poor perception of oneself. One's emotional state, dislikes, likes values and body image are affected by the opinions of others and can render one to have an inferior and insecure self–concept. How one communicates is also influenced by gender. Studies show that ones sex can place a person in a gender role expectation. Women and Men communicate differently and because sexual identity is defined through same sex parent or role model, women and men can get into gender role expectations. These expectations influence their perception attitudes and behavior that will result in a communication style. This early self–concept can effect each one's interpersonal relations. Women for instance are much–attached human beings they have very early identification with their mothers, and this can cause an on going pattern of role expectation. It can lead to interpersonal communication skills that are very nurturing and understanding. Women are not threatened by intimacy and communicating at a close range with people. Similarly, men also have an early identification process not with their mother, but their fathers. Men tend to be fairly reserved, and quite. On the other hand if the interviewer sees that you are not dressed appropriately for the interview and are unprepared this could also be a determining factor in whether or not you get the job. If you are a person who believes that all people are honest and truthful, projection is the belief that others share the same truthfulness and honesty, and we know that is not true. Self Perception Application: Getting to Know Yourself Application: Getting to Know Yourself By: Meghan Robinson Walden University January 20, 2013 Professor Geidner Robinson 1 My life is influenced by many different attributes not just from cultural aspects. I have had it very rough in life growing up since childhood being raised in a low income town as the oldest girl of four of three other female children; I was forced to grow up fast in life. My mother gave birth to me and all of my sisters in Ansonia, CT which is a small town where just about everyone knows each other and knows your all of your business. It was tough being eight years old and just wanting to fit in but you stuck out like a sore thumb. It was also hard because I was also exceptionally bright and received a lot of awards so a lot of the children didn't like me because they said that they thought I was a nerd as well or that I thought I was better than them because I knew more than them. But this was not the case I just simply wanted what every child wanted to be liked, loved, and accepted. My teachers took a special interest in me and always gave me extra work and push me beyond the limits because they knew I had special abilities and what I was capable of, this is one the reasons that inspired me to become a teacher. When I was twelve I moved to West Haven, Ct a middle class town with my Grandparents because my mother was not competent enough to raise us. This town was a little better but I was still getting made fun of but this time it was the black kids making fun of me because they said I talked like a white girl. I was so confused about this because I couldn't understand how you can talk like a color. That was how I was raised to not see color and still don't till this day. It feels good to reflect on my identity, it makes me realize that I am the person who I am today because of it. I make sure today not judge children and or their

  • 14. The Perception Of Self Awareness In America, our self–image undoubtedly plays a significant role in our daily lives. In an ever–changing world, we are constantly working in the lens of which we believe the world sees us. But is this true of all people? "Disparities in self–perception between different groups of people can easily be detected through cultural psychology (Heine, Takemoto, Moskalenko, Lasaleta & Henrich, 2008)." Perception, especially self–perception, can vary vastly from one culture to another. One perspective that drove home this idea was the thinking that "East Asian's attempt to place their concern with self–concept in the hands of the people around them, as opposed to some other cultures that can be found to focus more prominently on individualism ...show more content... Our positive feelings of ourselves may decrease because we realize we have fallen short of the standards that we try to live by and we immediately take action to work within those standards. However, action when in a state of self–awareness may vary across cultures. Since self–awareness can deviate among cultures, it may alter our perception of the way we believe the world sees us. There have been experiments on self–awareness that have measured cross cultural differences but one in particular studied cultures from both individualistic and collectivist cultures. The study focused on two cultures from different continents, and in virtually entirely different worlds. In the experiment, the objective self–awareness of both Japanese and Americans were tested. East Asians not only find it more important to focus on their audience, but they value the view of the audience about themselves more than they value their own view of themselves (Heine et al, 2008). This aspect of the Japanese leads to a more profound skill set when dealing with others around them. "The Japanese have a decent sense in determining when an individual in their audience will notice the sound of their finger tapping, and recall memories where they are the center of attention in the third person view because their focus is set in the mind of an audience member, rather than their own. Cassius, in his attempt to lure Brutus into the conspiracy references "a Brutus once that would have brooked/ Th' eternal devil to keep his state in Rome/ As easily as a king" (1.2.168–170). Cassius' use of"eternal devil" generates a symbolic portrayal of Caesar, with 'devil' representing Caesar's corruption. However, 'eternal' carries a dual meaning, denoting both Caesar's supernatural nature and the timeless extent and significance of his malfeasance. He call attention to the fact that Caesar has transformed into a 'devilish' nature. Later, in his speech to the Plebeians, Antony remarks, "O judgment, thou [art] fled to brutish beasts" (3.2.114). In addition, Antony constantly repeats the phrase "But Brutus is an honorable man" (3.2.82–117), to the point of overuse, intentionally forming a sarcastic tone to question Brutus' nobility. Interestingly enough, his pun on 'brutish beasts' suggests a marked difference in Brutus' personality, in which honor is transformed into savagery character. • 18. How Does Self Perception Affect Perception 1. How could factors such as your personal biases, level of self–awareness, cultural background, or the influence of others affect your perceptions? My personal biases affect my perception by skewing my opinions about certain things that others may view differently. For example, if I have been bitten by a dog I would have a more negative opinion about dogs than someone who has not been bitten. Your level of self–awareness can affect your perception by controlling your bias. If you know that you are generally biased towards a topic you can control the bias in order to be open to different perspectives and interpretations. Cultural background can affect your perceptions, because the views, morals and customs would be integrated with your personal views, morals and customs. I would not want to adapt to another individual's perceptions, because my personal perception makes me unique. I do think that it is beneficial to understand other's perceptions in order to improve your perception. By listening and contemplating another's perception you could learn from them, and your perception may change as a result. 3. How does the way you select, organize, and interpret information affect the way you communicate? The way you select information affects the way you communicate by either limiting or expanding the depth of the conversation. If you were selective with your attention, then the conversation will be very shallow and not beneficial, but if you pay close attention to the conversation, then the conversation will be deep and beneficial. If you select your information to fit your bias then you and another individual may disagree and change the nature of the conversation from lighthearted to a debate. The way you organize your information affects the way you communicate by changing the purpose. Based on the way you present your information, you could be trying to persuade Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Like in any type of communication, there's a chance that the intended meaning is lost. Specially, when people try to express their feelings the meanings get wrongly perceived. A person might want to break up a relationship but in a nice and mature way, so they try to smooth the situation and be sensitive about not saying something dry that can hurt its partner. But, if it is too sensitive and too nice, the meaning could get wrongly perceived and the recipient might think its just an issue they will get over easily, when the point totally was not that. Perception is someone's reality, it determines how they perceive information from another person and how the perception of others is the product of how you view yourself. Perception can be learned, physical or cultural depending on your environment. They type of learned perception is formed with someone's personality, from the thoughts, ideas and beliefs that are taught. • 21. Definition Of Self Perception On Appearance "Appearance is something absolute, but reality is not that way– everything is interdependent, not absolute" – Dalai Lama. There is more to a person than what they appear to be. Often times people are accepted or rejected in terms of a person's self perception on what is acceptable or not, based on what they look like. First impressions are formed rapidly and people believe those impressions are highly accurate (Pine, 2011). Before even speaking to someone, most people envision exactly what type of person they are looking at. It occurs instinctively, oftentimes without the person doing in intentionally, but in many cases it can impact decisions on a variety of important domains. It is nothing out the ordinary today to be concerned about one's looks. Many go out of their way to enhance their appearance and are more obsessed with their looks than they would like to admit. Self perception on appearance is practical and understandable, as attractive people are believed to have distinct advantages in our society. What triggers the need to appear acceptable to others does not however, measure a person's actual qualities. A physical trait on someone does not describe in any way what the person may be like. It is understandable that after living with the wide variety of beliefs we conform to through personal experiences and the influence of mass media, we start to believe what we see. Due to our exposure to the repeated images of mass media, many people naturally wish to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 22. Daryl Bem Self Perception Theory In 1967, Daryl Bem, a social psychologist, created a theory that was drawn from the impression formation and attribution theories and developed the theory of self–perception. Self–perception is defined as follows, "Self–perception theory relies on situational and dispositional attributions similar to attribution theory" (Frymier207). Bem created this theory to help understand one's understanding their own behavior through the same attributions that a person uses to understand someone else's behavior. Within self–perception theory, the person observes themselves in the same manner in which they observe others and use that process to acknowledge our own behaviors or ideas of ourselves. Bem suggest that there are two postulates that are associated with self–perception theory. The first is that individuals get to know themselves through the observation of their own behaviors or situations in which certain behaviors occur. Second is that external cues have little affect and the individual is in the same position as an outside observer. An example of this would be the foot–in–the–door effect. Self–perception theory from a psychological stand point is that a person's feelings and attitudes come from their external behaviors. Similarly, with self–perception theory, persuasion involves person acting and then figuring out their behavior or attitudes (Frymier207).
