2. Risk Management
• A technique used to mi2gate risk when implemen2ng
an architecture project
• It is important to iden2fy, classify, and mi2gate these
risks before star2ng so that they can be tracked
throughout the transforma2on effort

3. Risk Management in the ADM
There are two levels of risk that should be considered
1. Ini2al Level of Risk: Risk categoriza2on prior to
determining and implemen2ng mi2ga2ng ac2ons
2. Residual Level of Risk: Risk categoriza2on aBer
implementa2on of mi2ga2ng ac2ons

4. Risk Management in the ADM
• Risks are iden2fied in Phase A as part of the ini2al
Business Transforma2on Readiness Assessment
• Risk is monitored con2nuously in Phase G

5. Ini2al Risk Assessment - Effect
• The ini2al risk assessment is done by classifying risks
with respect to effect and frequency
• Effect can be assessed as
• Catastrophic: cri2cal financial loss that could result in
bankruptcy
• Cri2cal: serious financial loss in more than one line of
business leading to a loss in produc2vity and no ROI
• Marginal: minor financial loss in a line of business and
a reduced ROI on the IT investment
• Negligible: minimal impact on services and/or
products

6. Ini2al Risk Assessment - Frequency
Frequency can be assessed as
• Frequent: Likely to occur very oBen and/or con2nuously
• Likely: Occurs several 2mes over the course of a
transforma2on cycle
• Occasional: Occurs sporadically
• Seldom: Remotely possible and would probably occur
not more than once in the course of a transforma2on
cycle
• Unlikely: Will probably not occur during the course of a
transforma2on cycle

7. Ini2al Risk Assessment
The assessments of effect and frequency can then be
combined
• Extremely High Risk (E): the transforma2on will most
likely fail with severe consequences
• High Risk (H): Significant failure of parts of the
transforma2on resul2ng in certain goals not being
achieved
• Moderate Risk (M): No2ceable failure of parts of the
transforma2on, threatening the success of some
goals
• Low Risk (L): Some goals won’t be wholly successful
