Who are the people in the photograph?
The first picture is of four women working in a kitchen, the second photo is of Adolf Hitler shaking a
young boy’s hand, the third is several African Americans with police officers and police dogs, the
fourth is the Statue of Liberty with a man hanging by his neck from her arm, the fifth is a family of
three, and the final photo looks like a bunch of young men and two doctors.
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo
that tells you this.
1. These women are possibly cooking for all of their families combined.
2. Hitler is smirking while shaking a young boy’s hand and a woman is smiling in the background.
3. This is a dog riot with African Americans and the police during the 60’s.
4. This appears to be an African American man being hanged by the Statue of Liberty’s arm as
an act of racism.
5. It’s a family, possibly from Europe, about to arrive to Ellis Island to become citizens of the U.S.
6. This looks like German military officials checking soldiers out for war during the 1940’s.
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
1. Food was hard to come by in the Great Depression so the women had to cook in bulk for large
families.
2. Hitler tried to be a “kind” leader and appeal to the youth and respectful communities of
Germany, but he was ultimately a tyrant.
3. It shows the oppression of the Southern U.S. against African Americans and what the
everyday life of a black person consists of.
4. This correlates with third picture and how bad the black community had it in the U.S.
5. It’s a figure of freedom towards the Europeans and how the dreamed of coming to the U.S. for
the simple fact of the U.S. being the land of the free and land of opportunities.
6. It shows how strict and basically how strong the SS soldiers were in Europe.
Why is this photograph important to history?
1. History repeats itself; we are in this same situation right now with depression and rising prices
in the U.S.
2. It expresses the fact of how the Second World War was and how much power Hitler
possessed.
3. It explains the hard the times and struggles that the white people put against the blacks in the
1960’s and how we did not have any morality and compassion for the blacks.
4. The hatred the whites had towards the blacks in the mid 1960’s was an abomination.
5. The U.S. was like the North Star for the Eastern countries.
6. The U.S. and Soviet Armies struggled with how strong the Weirmacht (German) armies were
in WWII.
What questions does this photograph raise?
1. Why did the U.S. still have pride and patriotism back then during the Great Depression and
barely not have any now during this Recession?
2. Why did Hitler try to cover up his sinister ways to the German citizens?
3. Why did the white population have so much hatred for the black population just because of
their skin color?
4. Why express hatred so brutally?
5. How exactly did the U.S. handle all of the immigrants?
6. If the Weirmacht were the most powerful army in the East, how did they fall to the Soviet?
Write your own caption for the photograph:
1. “The Great Struggle”
2. “Snake in a Rabbit Suit”
3. “Inhumanity at Its Finest”
4. “Freedom isn’t Always Free”
5. “New Beginnings”
6. “Gotta Look Good before You Lose a War”
What could you do to find more information about this photograph?

etc.
