Who are the people in the photograph? 
1. A bunch of people in a log cabin 
2. Hitler with a young child with a couple women in the background 
3. Policemen (with angry dogs) and protesters 
4. The statue of Liberty with a man hung from the arm 
5. Newly arrived immigrant family to America 
6. A new selection of Army recruits at an inspection 
What is the situation of the people in the photograph? Provide evidence from the photo 
that tells you this. 
1. They look like they are making food 
2. Hitler is holding hands with the young, blonde child. The women in the background are smiling and 
look rather happy 
3. The police are releasing the dogs on the protesters, possibly to keep them in line. The dogs are 
acting crazy 
4. A black person is being hanged from the Statue of Liberty, probably a political cartoon 
5. They are on Ellis Island gazing to the Statue of Liberty 
6. They look like they are in the middle of an inspection 
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey? 
1. During this time period, women were expected to make meals for the men. 
2. They were trying to show Hitler as a kind leader and not the crazed maniac that many see him as. 
3. The photo could show the violence that can come from protests about controversial events and 
how police brutality was high at the time. 
4. It was probably showing the violence to black people in America at a certain time 
5. People see American as a land of opportunity 
6. They wanted the best, most fit men to be a part of the Army. 
Why is this photograph important to history? 
1. Women were usually always making food for people and it was socially acceptable 
2. It can be used to show people that Hitler was still human, even if his actions were not good. The 
picture could also be used as Nazi Propaganda to show how wonderful their leader is/was.
3. This photo shows how prejudice can lead to violence and it also shows how blacks stood up for 
their freedoms. 
4. America was/is a violent and discriminatory place to live 
5. It is important because immigration lead to a more cultural America 
6. Normal men were recruited for war, so a soldier could have been any person

1. What are they cooking and why are there so many in the kitchen 
2. How did people actually feel about Hitler? Were they actually happy to be around him or was it to 
just be a façade? 
3.Why did a government allow and condone such brutality? Did this brutality take place during the 
civil rights era or the Apartheid? 
4. Who was this picture exactly about? 
5. Where did the people come from? What are their goals in life? 
6. What country are these men from/in?

1. Women are hard at work in the kitchen 
2. Hitler was a sensitive man to his people, even though he did commit multiple atrocities. 
3. Was it worth fighting for? 
4. America had a brutal, violent image 
5. The perfect life 
6. A soldier gets his inspection for the Army 
What could you do to find more information about this photograph? 
1. Women are hard at work making food 
2. Look up other pictures of Hitler. 
3. Research the civil rights movement and Apartheid 
4. Find the original illustrator and who the picture was about 
5. Research the logs of immigrants to Ellis Island 
6. Look at the uniforms to figure out what the rankings are for the officers 
Based on what you have observed list 3 things you might infer from the photograph 
1- In the 70s because of the crazy pants, it’s either very cold or hot, depending on the time of year, 
the food will be delicious
2- The women are pleased with the child seeing Hitler, Hitler has genuine affection for the child, the 
child is not sure who this man is. 
3- Violence against protestors was encouraged. Protestors were defenseless but still stood up for 
their rights. They found it necessary to use excessive force. 
4- People felt endangered by America, it was a bad time to not be white (‘murica), people felt like their 
liberties were endangered 
5- The people are immigrants, They just came to America, They had a bad life where they were 
before. 
6. There is a war going on, men were drafted and not volunteers, it’s probably really ho t

Provide evidence from the photo that tells you this. 1. They look like they are making food 2. Hitler is holding hands with the young, blonde child. The women in the background are smiling and look rather happy 3. The police are releasing the dogs on the protesters, possibly to keep them in line. The dogs are acting crazy 4. They look like they are in the middle of an inspection What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey? 1. During this time period, women were expected to make meals for the men. 2. They were trying to show Hitler as a kind leader and not the crazed maniac that many see him as. 3. The photo could show the violence that can come from protests about controversial events and how police brutality was high at the time. 4. It was probably showing the violence to black people in America at a certain time 5. People see American as a land of opportunity 6. They wanted the best, most fit men to be a part of the Army. Why is this photograph important to history? 1. Women were usually always making food for people and it was socially acceptable 2. Protestors were defenseless but still stood up for their rights.
