18. THE HOOKTHE HOOK
How fast can you change four tires? One hour? Ten minutes? A few
years ago I witnessed a Formula One team do it in 2.7 seconds.
They said a perfect run would be just one second. In everything that
I do I strive to reach that one second – that perfect test score, that
perfect presentation, that perfect career. After speaking with Jake
Woodson, a recent hire, Dion Chen, and other industry professionals, I
know that my personality and passion lies in sales and trading. Through
my unique athletic background and passion, I will provide
competitiveness and drive that will set a benchmark for future interns. I
cannot wait to sit on a trading floor, execute trades, and engage in
research while receiving mentorship from the most world-renowned
investment bank. A career with Goldman Sachs is my one second and
this is how I will help Goldman reach its own one second ideal:

Subject: Job Title – Your Name OR come up with a very short hook for example “Beer & people lover has found her dream internship” or
“Your new HR Intern is inside” or “HIRING MANAGER NAME, I’m excited!” Depending on how cool the company is.
To: Name of job poster/whom it may concern/hiring manager (never write Dear Sirs – hello sexism!),
Your advert posted on WEBSITE NAME for JOB TITLE really caught my attention; Labatt has “good things brewing” and I would love to be
a component of the “good things”. I believe my XYZ (people management) experience alongside my drive, tenacity and exemplary
communications skills are a solid match to your needs. I also match the job requirements in the following ways:
• 2 years of leadership experience
• Exceptional presentational skills
• Advanced Excel capabilities
• UBC Innovation Award recipient
• 5 years’ experience organizing team building activities
I am confident that I will be a fantastic addition to your team! I have attached my resume and cover letter, please do not hesitate to contact
me with any questions you may have or to set up an interview on 778-XXX-XXXX.

Cover Email is first, if they want more, look at your resume even more your cover letter (the content of the email when sending your resume in)
Get the important info to your potential employer as easily as possible, give them the info so they don’t have to dig!
When in doubt, apply anyways!
Don’t talk yourself out of the job just because you think you don’t have all qualifications.
Want? – you can discover this through the interview process
Don’t pick a job that you’re 100% qualified for because you won’t learn anything, so aim for a 60-70% qualification match on COOL
Ask Class..
Is it because the job posting says so?
Or that’s what everyone always taught you to do and you don’t really know what youre doing
SPOILER ALERT contrary to popular belief some hiring managers actually DO read your cover letters
First document that you’re sending to the employer
Integrating Research into your cover letter
Industry trend+ your research = how it will affect the company
Company position amongst competitors + your skills/experiences = Value added to their bottom line/mission
Company need + your ideas/sills = result you will create for them
Whats the difference between these two documents?
Cover letter shows your INTEREST in the firm
It shows your stories, but more importantly, how that links to their firm
Make connection right off the bat
Preface the skills that you’ll be showcasing
What are your perceived brand of these companies (CAN CHANGE COMPANY)
Use whiteboard !
Get into 5 even groups
Take 5 minutes to brainstorm a creative hook for your assigned company
Be prepared to share!
Sync personal with company brand !
I feel like you can make any skill belong, if you’re able to build the right bridge and link. Use the words on the job description IN your CV if they are using a job tracking software
When I was applying to the HR Co-op position with YVR I had had no prior industry experience ( and they were looking for a senior HR Student on their 2nd or 3rd co-op term) what I did was link what I had done as a 202 TA to the job posting Spoiler alert, I got the job and they said they were very impressed with my accomplishments as a TA..
Format:
Depends on industry, sometimes its better to use bullet points sometimes its better to use paragraphs..
Some companies like the bolded words, others don’t
WHY?
Problem is that you can replace ABC with any other company name, and they wouldn’t even be able to tell.
You have personalized a cover letter enough when you replace the co’s name with another company and it no longer works.
Make sure that it tailors back to your hook or your brand used. Have a CTA, general thanks
